Critical insights into the potential risks of antipsychotic drugs to fish, including through effects on behaviour

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Antipsychotic drugs (APDs) are a diverse class of neuroactive pharmaceuticals increasingly detected in surface and ground waters globally. Some APDs are classified as posing a high environmental risk, due, in part, to their tendency to bioaccumulate in wildlife, including fish.

When Governments Deliver: Migrant Remittances and the Willingness to Pay Higher Local Taxes

open access: yesDevelopment and Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article deviates from prior research which considers only national‐level and formal taxes when examining tax attitudes and behaviours in migrant‐sending countries. It investigates the relationship between the receipt of remittances and ‘conditional tax compliance’, and how it varies between the local and the national levels.

Healing or Harming? Unveiling the Dual Impact of IMF Reforms on Child Health Outcomes in Developing Nations

open access: yesEconomics of Transition and Institutional Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We provide new insights regarding the impact of IMF programme participation and imposed policy reforms on child mortality rates using a sample of developing countries from 2000 to 2013. To account for the selection bias related to both IMF participation and conditionality, we employ a recently developed compound instrumental variables ...

Public health reforms and the mortality decline in nineteenth‐century Italy

open access: yesThe Economic History Review, EarlyView.
Abstract This study examines the impact of Italy's 1887–8 health reforms on mortality, contributing to the historical debate on the state's role in Europe's health transition. Leveraging event‐study‐style difference‐in‐differences approach, we assess the effectiveness of the Crispi–Pagliani reforms, which strengthened public health governance and ...

Biochemical and structural characterization of chlorite dismutase enzyme from Pseudomonas aeruginosa

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Chlorite dismutase (Cld) is a heme b oxidoreductase that can decompose chlorite (ClO2−$$ {\mathrm{ClO}}_2^{-} $$ or OClO−) into harmless chloride (Cl−) and dioxygen (O2) with high turnover rates. Cld was found to be involved in different biological processes, and the rare reaction it catalyzes makes it a prominent enzyme for different applications. The

The Influence of Spatial Extent and Distance on Macroinvertebrate‐Environment Relationships in Conterminous USA Stream Sites

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim The relationships between environmental variables and macroinvertebrate assemblages depend on spatial extent, but the relative importance of local and regional factors remains unclear. Understanding these scale‐dependent relationships is crucial for improving biodiversity assessments and ecosystem management.

In Hyphomicrobium denitrificans Two Related Sulfane‐Sulfur Responsive Transcriptional Repressors Regulate Thiosulfate Oxidation and Have a Deep Impact on Nitrate Respiration and Anaerobic Biosyntheses

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
In Hyphomicrobium denitrificans, the use of thiosulfate as a supplemental electron donor is regulated by two homologous sulfane‐sulfur responsive ArsR‐type transcriptional repressors, sHdrR and SoxR, that act cooperatively. Remarkably, the regulation by sHdrR/SoxR extends far beyond sulfur oxidation and deeply affects anaerobic metabolism, particularly
