Crucial parameters for precise copy number variation detection in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded solid cancer samples

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that copy number variations (CNVs) can be reliably detected in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded (FFPE) solid cancer samples using ultra‐low‐pass whole‐genome sequencing, provided that key (pre)‐analytical parameters are optimized.

Correlation of the differential expression of PIK3R1 and its spliced variant, p55α, in pan‐cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PIK3R1 undergoes alternative splicing to generate the isoforms, p85α and p55α. By combining large patient datasets with laboratory experiments, we show that PIK3R1 spliced variants shape cancer behavior. While tumors lose the protective p85α isoform, p55α is overexpressed, changes linked to poorer survival and more pronounced in African American ...

Differential regulation drives plasticity in sex determination gene networks

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2010
Background Sex determination networks evolve rapidly and have been studied intensely across many species, particularly in insects, thus presenting good models to study the evolutionary plasticity of gene networks.

Replacing Myths with Facts: Sex-Selective Abortion Laws in the United States [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Sex selection is the practice of attempting to control the sex of one's offspring in order to achieve a desired sex. One method of sex selection is sex-selective abortion. Laws banning sex-selective abortion are proliferating in the United States.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Age validation, growth, mortality, and demographic modeling of spotted gully shark (Triakis megalopterus) from the southeast coast of South Africa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This study documents validation of vertebral band-pair formation in spotted gully shark (Triakis megalopterus) with the use of fluorochrome injection and tagging of captive and wild sharks over a 21-year period.

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...

Sex determination in femurs of modern Egyptians: A comparative study between metric measurements and SRY gene detection

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Forensic Sciences, 2014
Background: Sex determination of the human skeleton has been studied in forensic and physical anthropology. Long bones have been especially used because of the ease of defining measurements and better preservation.

Molecular analysis of sex determination in sex-reversed and true hermaphroditism.

open access: yesBrazilian journal of medical and biological research = Revista brasileira de pesquisas medicas e biologicas, 1997
The SRY (sex region of Y) gene determines testis formation but not all cases of sex reversal in humans can be explained by alterations in this gene. We studied one 46,XY female, four 46,XX males, and nine true hermaphrodites (TH): three with an XY and six with an XX chromosomal constitution. The SRY gene was identified in the XX males and the TH with a
