SEX DIFFERENTIATION IN AMPHIBIA
Nature, 1946THE research which is summarized below was based on the well-known investigations of Witschi, who showed that at an early stage of development the amphibian gonad consists of a cortex and medulla. At a later stage, sex differentiation is marked by an increase of cortex relative to medulla or vice versa.

Sex Differentiation in Mammals
Nature, 1967Sex does not appear to be determined by the action of conventional genes. Heterochromatin—the substance of sex chromosomes—does, however, provide some clues as to how sexual differentiation may be brought about.

Unisexual Cucumber Flowers, Sex and Sex Differentiation
2013Sex is a universal phenomenon in the world of eukaryotes. Attempts have been made to understand regulatory mechanisms for plant sex determination by investigating unisexual flowers. The cucumber plant is one of the model systems for studying how sex determination is regulated by phytohormones.

Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text. Uterine mesenchymal tumors are genetically heterogenous; those with uniform cytomorphology, best exemplified by endometrial stromal tumors, often contain various fusion genes. Novel fusions involving

[Sex differentiation and sex chromosomes].
Nihon rinsho. Japanese journal of clinical medicine, 2004The mechanisms for sex differentiation and the genes on the sex chromosomes are varied among different species. For human, SRY is the only testis-determining factor on the Y chromosome and triggers the cascade for male sex-determination. However, even if normal SRY exists, the haploinsufficienty of SOX9 or KTS+ splicing form of WT-1 can cause male-to ...

Sex Differentiation: Organizing Effects of Sex Hormones
2013Men and women differ, not only in their anatomy but also in their behavior. Research using animal models has convincingly shown that sex differences in the brain and behavior are induced by sex hormones during a specific, hormone-sensitive period during early development.

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on sex differentiation as a process rather than examining sex phenotypes as they appear in adults. Fishes provide excellent material to approach the problems of sex differentiation and of the evolution of sex among animals. This chapter discusses the sexuality in fishes.

[Sex determination and sex differentiation].
Die Naturwissenschaften, 1981Sex determination in mammals proceeds like a cascade from the level of the sex chromosomes to the gonads, to the genital ducts, and finally to the expression of the male or female phenotype. At the level of the genital ducts male sex organs are induced by testosterone. Its action depends on an intact cytoplasmic androgen receptor protein.

SEX DETERMINATION, SEX DIFFERENTIATION AND INTERSEXUALITY
Journal of the American Medical Association, 1935There is no more interesting biologic or clinical problem than that of intersexuality. What, as a matter of fact, does one mean by sex? Biologists answer that there is no such biologic entity and that the concept of sex is confused with that of the sexes.
