Contrasting the conceptualisation of victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation: a case study of Brazilians in Spain and Portugal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Despite the significant emphasis given to the trafficking of Brazilians to the sex industry of the Iberian Peninsula, the concepts of “victim of trafficking for sexual exploitation” used in these three countries vary.

Mechanically Tunable Bone Scaffolds: In Vivo Hardening of 3D‐Printed Calcium Phosphate/Polycaprolactone Inks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A 3D bone scaffold with osteogenic properties and capable of hardening in vivo is developed. The scaffold is implanted in a ductile state, and a phase transformation of the ceramic induces the stiffening and strengthening of the scaffold in vivo. Abstract Calcium phosphate 3D printing has revolutionized customized bone grafting.

In‐Depth Analysis of Disease Manifestations in Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody–Associated Vasculitides Identifies Distinct Clinical Phenotypes

open access: yesACR Open Rheumatology
Objective The antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)‐associated vasculitides are heterogeneous disorders. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize subgroups of patients based on sex, ANCA, age at diagnosis, and organ involvement ...

Differences in intestinal size, structure, and function contributing to feed efficiency in broiler chickens reared at geographically distant locations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The contribution of the intestinal tract to differences in residual feed intake (RFI) has been inconclusively studied in chickens so far. It is also not clear if RFI-related differences in intestinal function are similar in chickens raised in different ...

Near‐Infrared Organic Photovoltaic Electrodes for Subretinal Neurostimulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Organic photovoltaic electrodes based on the D18:Y6 blend enable precise and light‐controlled activation of retinal ganglion cells in a degenerating retina. NIR Light‐driven activation of retinal ganglion cells, tunable stimulation parameters, and biocompatibility with human retinal organoids highlight their potential for next‐generation prosthetics ...

Sex-based Differences and Comparative Predictive Value of MELD 3.0 in Simultaneous Liver-Kidney Transplantation Waitlist Outcomes After Standardization of Listing Criteria in the United States

open access: yesTransplantation Direct
Background. Sex disparities in solid organ transplantation are well documented. Relative changes in sex-based outcome disparities after the 2017 standardization of simultaneous liver-kidney (SLK) listing criteria in the United States have not been ...

Functional analysis of B and C class floral organ genes in spinach demonstrates their role in sexual dimorphism

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology, 2010
Background Evolution of unisexual flowers entails one of the most extreme changes in plant development. Cultivated spinach, Spinacia oleracea L., is uniquely suited for the study of unisexual flower development as it is dioecious and it achieves ...

Intestinal transplantation under tacrolimus monotherapy after perioperative lymphoid depletion with rabbit anti-thymocyte globulin (thymoglobulin®) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Modifications in the timing and dosage of immunosuppression can ameliorate the morbidity and mortality that has prevented widespread use of intestinal transplantation (ITx) in children.

A Vascular Microphysiological Model of Lung Fibrosis Reveals That Myofibroblasts and IPF Patient‐Derived Fibroblasts Impair Angiogenesis and Vasculogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A microphysiological lung fibrosis model recapitulates myofibroblast–vascular interactions. Induced myofibroblasts and patient‐derived IPF fibroblasts impair angiogenesis and increase vascular permeability via TGF‐β1–driven signaling. Pharmacological interventions with SB 431542 and VEGF supplementation restore vascular morphology and barrier function.
