The value of sexed bovine semen
Journal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, 2004SummarySemen sexing may be used in a variety of practical situations, where part (or all) of the herd may be inseminated with X‐ and Y‐chromosome‐enriched semen. Expressions are presented to calculate the net present value of progeny derived from a semen dose, dependent on the values of females and males, and on the efficiency of sexing.

The Bovine Practitioner, 1996
Can we indeed, predetermine the gender of farm animals through the use of sexed semen? For years, animal scientists, mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins, soothsayers, Ouija boards, barbers, and shoe salesmen have all boasted about a 50% success rate.

Preservation and artificial insemination of sexed semen in sheep
Reproduction, Fertility and Development, 2004Sperm-sexing technology using flow cytometry is in advanced stages of development for the sperm of several species. The sorting process could compromise sperm viability and sperm require specific handling procedures both before and after sorting to maintain the integrity and function of the sorted sperm.

Danish A.I. field data with sexed semen
Theriogenology, 2009The objective of this study was to compare conception rates, non-return rates and sex ratios of sexed and conventional semen from the same sires in commercial dairy herds in Denmark. The semen was produced from three bulls from each of the three major dairy breeds in Denmark: Holstein, Jersey and Danish Red Dairy Breed (nine bulls total), in order to ...

The use of sex-sorted semen in horses
Journal of Equine Veterinary ScienceThe application of sex-sorted semen in horses has historically lagged the bovine industry due to differences in the reproductive physiology and grater variability in equine semen quality. Recent advancements, including SuperGen™ sorters and Ultraplus™ semen processing methods developed by STgenetics® (Navasota, Texas), have significantly improved the ...

Applications and world-wide use of sexed semen in cattle
Animal Reproduction Science, 2022Successful sorting of sperm based on presence of the X- or Y-chromosome was first reported in the early 1980's with the first live births reported in rabbits in 1988. Subsequent development of technological efficiencies resulted in commercialization of sex-sorted semen to cattle producers in 2003-2005.

Semen Donation and Sex Selection
1990In 1948, artificial insemination with donor’s semen (AID) was performed for the first time in Japan at the Keio University hospital. Then the first successful cases of four pregnancies with donor’s frozen semen were also reported by us. In Japan, since 1949, more than 7000 patients have become pregnant following AID with fresh or frozen semen, and ...

Semen quality and sex hormones with reference to metal welding
Reproductive Toxicology, 1998Welding may involve hazards to the male reproductive system, but previous studies of semen quality have produced inconsistent results. We studied the effects of welding on markers of semen quality in a Danish nationwide sample of 430 first-time pregnancy planners without earlier reproductive experience. Couples were recruited among members of the union

Application and Commercialization of Flow Cytometrically Sex‐Sorted Semen
Reproduction in Domestic Animals, 2008ContentsThe current technology to sort X and Y chromosome bearing sperm population requires individual identification and selection of spermatozoa in a modified high‐speed flow cytometer. For farm animal species, the technology is capable of producing sexed sperm at greater than 90% purity.
