Sexual selection and speciation
Trends in Ecology and Evolution, 2001The power of sexual selection to drive changes in mate recognition traits gives it the potential to be a potent force in speciation. Much of the evidence to support this possibility comes from comparative studies that examine differences in the number of species between clades that apparently differ in the intensity of sexual selection.

Competition over mates takes many forms and has far-reaching consequences for many organisms. Recent work suggests that relative reproductive rates of males and females, sperm competition and quality variation among mates affect the strength of sexual selection.

Recent studies of a variety of polygynously mating animals indicate that females do not always choose mates independently, but instead may copy the choices of others. Copying could serve either to increase the accuracy of mate assessment or to reduce its costs. It is also likely to affect the intensity of sexual selection.

Sexual selection and fertility
Theoretical Population Biology, 1983Genetic models are analyzed in which sexual selection is combined with fertility selection. In these models, the sexual selection acts on males, the fertility selection on either males, females or both sexes. The phenotypes thus selected may be determined either by dominant and recessive alleles or by each homozygous and heterozygous genotype ...

Recently Geoffrey Miller has suggested that humor evolved through sexual selection as a signal of "creativity," which in turn implies youthfulness, intelligence, and adaptive unpredictability. Drawing upon available empirical studies, I argue that the evidence for a link between humor and creativity is weak and ambiguous.

This chapter examines sexual selection. Like all other mammals, we are each male or female, and both must participate to produce offspring. Many other species, however, regularly reproduce with no appearance of either sex or gender. Sex is associated with reproduction in species like our own, but it is certainly not necessary for it.

Sexual selection and condition‐dependence
Journal of Evolutionary Biology, 2009AbstractThe handicap theory of sexual selection suggests that females prefer mates who display extravagant ornaments that advertise their quality or condition. It is often assumed that as such ornamental traits undergo sexually‐selected exaggeration, they must inevitably become more sensitive to condition, and thus more informative.

Sexual selection and the brain
Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 1996Sex differences are intrinsically interesting, particularly in the brain. When sexually dimorphic structures mediate learning, and when such learning ability is necessary to compete for mates, then such differences are best understood within the framework of sexual selection.

Recent research on sexual selection in animals has begun to indicate that 'handicaps' and 'honest signalling' may play more important roles than hitherto thought. This review reappraises theories of sexual selection in the light of these new developments.

Sexual selection and the maintenance of sexual reproduction
Nature, 2001The maintenance of sexual reproduction is a problem in evolutionary theory because, all else being equal, asexual populations have a twofold fitness advantage over their sexual counterparts and should rapidly outnumber a sexual population because every individual has the potential to reproduce.
