Competition over mates takes many forms and has far-reaching consequences for many organisms. Recent work suggests that relative reproductive rates of males and females, sperm competition and quality variation among mates affect the strength of sexual selection.

This chapter examines sexual selection. Like all other mammals, we are each male or female, and both must participate to produce offspring. Many other species, however, regularly reproduce with no appearance of either sex or gender. Sex is associated with reproduction in species like our own, but it is certainly not necessary for it.

For an organism, reproduction is the only way of transmitting its genes to the next generations. Because of the inter-sexual competition to access the potential mates and intra-sexual selection of mates equipped with desired traits are the factors that limit the number of successful individuals achieving this aim.
