Sexual selection and the brain

Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 1996
Sex differences are intrinsically interesting, particularly in the brain. When sexually dimorphic structures mediate learning, and when such learning ability is necessary to compete for mates, then such differences are best understood within the framework of sexual selection.

Sexual selection and the maintenance of sexual reproduction

Nature, 2001
The maintenance of sexual reproduction is a problem in evolutionary theory because, all else being equal, asexual populations have a twofold fitness advantage over their sexual counterparts and should rapidly outnumber a sexual population because every individual has the potential to reproduce.

Sexual selection and condition‐dependence

Journal of Evolutionary Biology, 2009
AbstractThe handicap theory of sexual selection suggests that females prefer mates who display extravagant ornaments that advertise their quality or condition. It is often assumed that as such ornamental traits undergo sexually‐selected exaggeration, they must inevitably become more sensitive to condition, and thus more informative.

THE EVOLUTION OF SEXUAL DIMORPHISM BY SEXUAL SELECTION: THE SEPARATE EFFECTS OF INTRASEXUAL SELECTION AND INTERSEXUAL SELECTION

Evolution, 1990
Libellula luctuosa, a pond dragonfly found in eastern North America, is apparently sexually dimorphic. Previous studies of the mating behavior in this species suggested that both male-male competition and female mate choice are important influences. Males compete for territories, where they attract females and where mating occurs.

Sexual Reproduction And Sexual Selection

1999
Abstract A group of organisms in which sexual reproduction was entirely unknown might none the less evolve under the action of natural selection. This condition cannot, I believe, be ascribed with certainty to any known group. Yet, since it is impossible to draw any sharp distinction within a whole series of asexual processes, from ...
