As above, so below: A perspective into the application of land‐forest monitoring methods for the assessment of marine animal forests

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 4, Page 1124-1142, April 2026.
Abstract Marine animal forests (MAFs) are benthic ecosystems dominated by vertically structuring filter‐ and suspension‐feeders. As terrestrial forests, they are considered biodiversity hotspots, forming canopies, serving as a refuge, nursery, reproduction and feeding shelters for many species.

From 3D Surface Documentation to Visualization in Forensic Practice: A Review of Current Methods and Emerging Technologies

open access: yesAPMIS, Volume 134, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT The accurate documentation of bodies, injuries, death scenes, accidents, and crime scenes is fundamental to forensic investigations. Traditional two‐dimensional (2D) photography and written reports have inherent limitations in representing complex spatial relationships.

Rapid Decreases and Performance Declines in Northeast Pacific Seamount Foundation Species Detected in an Oxygen Minimum Zone

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 4, April 2026.
Across 12 long‐term monitoring sites on three Northeast Pacific seamounts, 163 of 844 cold‐water coral and sponge individuals were lost between surveys 3–5 years apart, with abundance declining at five sites and condition (i.e., health) declining at nine.

3D As‐Built Environments in Extended Reality Applications: A Systematic Review

open access: yesThe Photogrammetric Record, Volume 41, Issue 194, April/June 2026.
This systematic review identifies BIM and game engines as the primary tools for integrating 3D as‐built environments into XR. While multi‐sensor fusion and multimodal interaction enhance immersion, persistent challenges like manual modeling and bandwidth limitations continue to hinder full ecosystem maturation.

Terrestrial Structure from Motion Photogrammetry for Deriving Forest Inventory Data

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2019
The measurements of tree attributes required for forest monitoring and management planning, e.g., National Forest Inventories, are derived by rather time-consuming field measurements on sample plots, using calipers and measurement tapes.

Towards cost-efficient prospection and 3D visualization of underwater structures using compact ROVs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The deployment of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) for underwater prospection and 3D visualization has grown significantly in civil applications for a few decades.

3-D uncertainty-based topographic change detection with structure-from-motion photogrammetry: precision maps for ground control and directly georeferenced surveys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry is revolutionising the collection of detailed topographic data, but insight into geomorphological processes is currently restricted by our limited understanding of SfM survey uncertainties.

Influence of Grain Arrangement on Particle Mobility and Patterns of Variability Between Gravel Bed Rivers

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 131, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract The grain‐scale arrangement of gravel is important in controlling the stability of river beds, sediment supply and geomorphic adjustment of river channels. However, the influence of gravel bed texture on grain mobility is difficult to quantify because differences in flow history and sediment composition influence the development of bed ...

Calibration Wizard: A Guidance System for Camera Calibration Based on Modelling Geometric and Corner Uncertainty [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
It is well known that the accuracy of a calibration depends strongly on the choice of camera poses from which images of a calibration object are acquired.
