Shadows

Applied Optics, 2015
We investigate the brightness distribution in and around outdoor shadows (for a variety of sky conditions) using modeling and field measurements. The dominant factor influencing the brightness of a shadow is the solid angle subtended by the object blocking the Sun.

Homoclinic Shadowing

Journal of Dynamics and Differential Equations, 2005
The famous Smale-Birkhoff theorem provides a criterion for chaotic behavior of dynamical systems. More precisely, the existence of transversal homoclinic orbits leads to hyperbolic sets containing the shift, a horseshoe and thus chaotic dynamics. In this interesting and well-written paper, the authors present a new and rigorous method to establish the ...

Shadowing, limit shadowing and two-sided limit shadowing

Journal of Interdisciplinary Mathematics, 2020
In this paper, we introduce the shadowing, limit shadowing and the shadow by two- sided limit. These properties are related to each other according to specifice terms.

Shadowing the Shadowers

2017
The study sets out to examine in detail a Carnegie Shadowing Group in a large urban comprehensive school, questioning what the impact may be of participation in such a group. This piece of action research takes place in the context of a wider literature-based enquiry into the nature and benefits of reading for pleasure and what may motivate young ...

Shadow Play

2022
E. Elias Merhige’s fictionalised documentary account of the making of Murnau’s Nosferatu, Shadow of the Vampire (2000), is a reflection on that which (at least within his film) casts a shadow but has no reflection: the vampire. Simultaneously, the film shadows that which has a reflectionbut casts no shadow: the cinema.

Maghrebian Shadow

2020
Abdelkébir Khatibi, who was seduced by the land of the Rising Sun, left us a few texts on Japan and its culture such as Japanese Shadow and “Tanizaki Revisited” in which he refers, in particular, to the great Japanese writer Junichiro Tanizaki. These texts indeed present a dual interest: on the one hand, they allow us to discover unknown aspects of ...

Shadow Removal Based on Shadow Direction and Shadow Attributes

2006 International Conference on Computational Inteligence for Modelling Control and Automation and International Conference on Intelligent Agents Web Technologies and International Commerce (CIMCA'06), 2006
Moving shadow removal is critical for robust moving object tracking system. A shadow removal algorithm based on shadow attributes is presented in this paper. The direction of shadow is estimated first, and then shadow points are sampled based on the direction of shadow. At last the shadow attributes is calculated using the sampled shadow points.

Sputter shadowing

Journal of Ultrastructure Research, 1984
A device has been constructed which allows specimens to be shadowed in a conventional sputter water. This process of sputter shadowing lends to specimens a contrast suitable for imaging in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). The process has the practical advantages over metal evaporation shadowing of lower instrumentation costs, less user ...

The power of shadows: shadow stereopsis

Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 1989
Our ability to localize objects in three-dimensional space relies primarily on the stereoscopic capability of our visual system. It is generally believed that parallax disparities in the retinal images in our two eyes are required for experiencing stereovision. Traditionally, parallax disparities refer to points that are well defined within the objects,
