A bilingual pediatrician is afforded an unusual window into the lives of America's illegal immigrants: though they're shut out of our health care system, their American-born children are eligible for Medicaid, so they tell the pediatrician their stories and seek advice.

Applied Optics, 2015
We investigate the brightness distribution in and around outdoor shadows (for a variety of sky conditions) using modeling and field measurements. The dominant factor influencing the brightness of a shadow is the solid angle subtended by the object blocking the Sun.

Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership, 2015
This case highlights a school principal’s leading practice as she worked to transform the social and educational status of students, teachers, and community in a small urban primary school. We employ shadowing, a technique popularized in work-based education and photography, as reflective and research tools.

The power of shadows: shadow stereopsis
Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 1989Our ability to localize objects in three-dimensional space relies primarily on the stereoscopic capability of our visual system. It is generally believed that parallax disparities in the retinal images in our two eyes are required for experiencing stereovision. Traditionally, parallax disparities refer to points that are well defined within the objects,

In the Shadow of Shadow Banking
SSRN Electronic Journal, 2018Introducing shadow banks into the economy lowers the money supply measured as the sum of cash and deposits, while the amount of payment liquidity does not decrease as long as the liabilities of shadow banks remain fully liquid. At the same time, the total amount of credit available to firms increases with the size of shadow banks which lend to firms ...

The study sets out to examine in detail a Carnegie Shadowing Group in a large urban comprehensive school, questioning what the impact may be of participation in such a group. This piece of action research takes place in the context of a wider literature-based enquiry into the nature and benefits of reading for pleasure and what may motivate young ...

Shadowing, limit shadowing and two-sided limit shadowing
Journal of Interdisciplinary Mathematics, 2020In this paper, we introduce the shadowing, limit shadowing and the shadow by two- sided limit. These properties are related to each other according to specifice terms.

Shadows are ubiquitous in our life. Through the phenomena of shadows, we focus on a novel way which can change people's perspectives of observing surroundings and create a natural outdoor interaction for children in their daily life. In this paper, we present a mobile AR game which uses shadows as clues with a treasure hunting game mechanism to make a ...

Let P be a family of sets ordered by \(\leq\) such that \(\) is an upper semi-lattice. \(C\subseteq \cup P\) is said to be the shadow of an ideal if there is an ideal \(I\subseteq P\) such that \(\cup I=C\). The author's intuition is that the elements of P are ``small'' subalgebras while shadows of ideals are ``large'' subalgebras.

Impossible Shadows and the Shadow Correspondence Problem
Perception, 2004Shadows cast by objects contain potentially useful information about the location of these objects in the scene as well as their surface reflectance. However, before the visual system can use this information, it has to solve the shadow correspondence problem, that is to match the objects with their respective shadows.
