Axis-aligned filtering for interactive sampled soft shadows [PDF]
We develop a simple and efficient method for soft shadows from planar area light sources, based on explicit occlusion calculation by raytracing, followed by adaptive image-space filtering. Since the method is based on Monte Carlo sampling, it is accurate.

Shadow filters – new family of second-order filters
A new family of second-order filters is introduced. When an external voltage amplifier is added to a second-order filter cell (passive or active), the characteristic frequency of the resulting filter can then be modified by acting only on the value of the gain of this amplifier.
