An overview of shaft voltages and bearing currents in rotating machines
2016 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, 2016Shaft voltages and associated "shaft currents" or "bearing currents" have been known since more than a century on DC and AC motors under classical line operation. More recently with the emergence of inverter drives, there has been an increase of high-frequencies bearing currents and shaft voltages creating mainly premature failure of bearings. Although

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2000
This paper presents test results on problems and solutions of motor shaft voltages and bearing currents in medium-voltage pulsewidth modulated (PWM) drive systems. Tests show that multilevel medium-voltage PWM voltage-source inverter drives can cause motor bearing currents, similar to a low-voltage PWM drives, even with one motor bearing insulated ...

Monitoring of shaft voltages and grounding currents in rotating machines
2014 17th International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems (ICEMS), 2014The phenomenon of voltages and currents on motor and generator shafts has been known for the last 100 years [1, 2]. It affects motors, hydro generators and turbo generators. There has been an increase in occurrences and intensity of shaft current damages as machines became larger, particularly on high speed turbo generators.

Induction Motor Shaft-Frame Voltage Analysis
2021 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), 2021Most three-phase, squirrel-cage, induction motor (SCIM) fault diagnosis/detection techniques are based on the analysis of the stator currents and/or frame mechanical vibration. In this paper, a preliminary theoretical and experimental analysis of the shaft-frame voltage (SFV) in line-fed SCIMs, as a potential fault diagnosis and/or condition monitoring

Frame-to-Shaft Voltage and End-to-End Shaft Voltage Analysis According to Eccentricity in IPMSMs
2018 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), 2018Common-mode voltage (CMV) by switching pattern of space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) excites the parasitic capacitance links in the motor and results in frame-to-shaft voltage. In addition, asymmetric magnetic fields by common-mode current (CMI), eccentricity, and demagnetization causes the end-to-end shaft voltage.

Determination of shaft position from shaft voltage on a synchronous generator
2005 5th IEEE International Symposium on Diagnostics for Electric Machines, Power Electronics and Drives, 2005Shaft voltages and currents are an unavoidable characteristic of rotating machines. Recently there has been renewed interest in the diagnostic possibilities of these signals. This paper presents a technique to determine the mechanical shaft position using a capture of the shaft voltage and a mechanically aligned pre-recorded reference.

Characteristics of Shaft Voltage and Bearing Currents
IEEE Industry Applications Magazine, 1997This article reviews investigations into reduced bearing life due to voltage source adjustable speed drive (ASD) AC motor operation. Relevant bearing failure mechanisms and indicators are discussed. dv/dt and electric discharge machining (EDM) contributions are discussed and experimental data presented showing the voltage levels on motor shafts when ...

Shaft voltages caused by alternating flux encircling the shaft
Seventh International Conference on Electrical Machines and Drives, 1995If a voltmeter is connected across the two ends of the shaft of a rotating electrical machine, a small voltage can normally be detected. In many cases this voltage is too small to cause problems, but if it reaches a level at which significant current starts to flow through bearings or other components attached to the shaft, then precautions such as ...
