Great East Japan Earthquake, JR East Mitigation Successes, and Lessons for California High-Speed Rail, MTI Report 12-37 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
California and Japan both experience frequent seismic activity, which is often damaging to infrastructure. Seismologists have developed systems for detecting and analyzing earthquakes in real-time.

Role of Histidine‐Containing Peptoids in Accelerating the Kinetics of Calcite Growth

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Amphiphilic histidine‐containing peptoids mimic carbonic anhydrase (CA) to accelerate calcite step growth. In the presence of Zn2+, they promote the deprotonation of HCO3−, the desolvation of Ca2+, and the reorganization of interfacial hydration layers, thereby reducing the activation barrier for calcite growth.

Shaking Table Test Study on Seismic Performance of Hollow Rectangular Piers

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2019
To study the seismic performance of hollow reinforced concrete piers under dynamic loads, nine hollow pier specimens with different stirrup ratios, reinforcement ratios, and axial compression ratios are designed and manufactured. The El Centro wave, Taft

Shaking a Box of Sand

open access: yes, 2001
We present a simple model of a vibrated box of sand, and discuss its dynamics in terms of two parameters reflecting static and dynamic disorder respectively.

Lithium Intercalation in the Anisotropic Van Der Waals Semiconductor CrSBr

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We report the lithium intercalation in the layered van der Waals crystal CrSBr, revealing strongly anisotropic ion‐migration dynamics. Optical and electrical characterization of exfoliated CrSBr shows lithium diffusion coefficients that differ by more than an order of magnitude along a‐ and b‐directions, consistent with molecular dynamics simulations ...

Transparent UV‐Curable Self‐Sanitizing Coatings Applicable to Diverse Surfaces and High‐Touch Screens to Mitigate Deadly Pathogen Transmission

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Development of a transparent, self‐sanitizing antimicrobial coating technology applicable to a wide range of materials and surfaces‐including touchscreens, transparent substrates, and metal, plastic, and glass‐regardless of pathogen type. The spray‐coated, UV‐cross‐linked imidazole‐based quaternary ammonium chloride materials provide broad‐spectrum ...
