Molecular-Scale Considerations of Enhanced Oil Recovery in Shale

open access: yesEnergies, 2020
With only less than 10% recovery, the primary production of hydrocarbon from shale reservoirs has redefined the energy equation in the world. Similar to conventional reservoirs, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques could be devised to enhance the ...

A Critical Review of Osmosis-Associated Imbibition in Unconventional Formations

open access: yesEnergies, 2021
In petroleum engineering, imbibition is one of the most important elements for the hydraulic fracturing and water flooding processes, when extraneous fluids are introduced to the reservoir.

Generalized Matsuoka–Nakai criterion considering hydrostatic pressure dependence in the brittle–ductile region

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Three sets of strength data were selected, including hydrostatic pressure independent within the brittle region (HPI‐B), hydrostatic pressure dependent within the brittle region (HPD‐B), and hydrostatic pressure dependent within the brittle–ductile region (HPD‐BD). For HPI type, the failure envelope within the deviatoric plane remains constant.

Slip versus dilation tendency parameter space as a tool for prospecting structurally controlled geothermal systems in greenfield: insights from the greater Ruhr region

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study highlights that with the static and time‐dependent evolution of slip versus dilation tendency parameter space, structurally controlled deep geothermal systems can be selected within areas of higher permeability and lower seismic hazard. Abstract Faults play a vital role in the Earth's hydraulic system by facilitating fluid flow when dilating

Geological factors controlling high flowback rates of shale gas wells in the Changning area of the southern Sichuan Basin, China

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science
In the Changning block of the southern Sichuan Basin, the shale gas wells in the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation to Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation (Wufeng–Longmaxi) demonstrate significant difference in flowback rate of fracturing fluid, given the ...

Failure characteristics analysis of the inclined interlayer during water‐soluble cavity construction of underground salt caverns for large‐scale energy storage

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
In the process of water‐soluble cavern construction of salt cavern energy storage, since the interlayer does not dissolve in water easily, sudden collapse will cause engineering accidents such as bending and damage of the inner tube of the cavern.

The damage and failure mechanism of prestatically loaded rock during medium‐strain rate cyclic impact loading

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Based on experimental results and theoretical analysis, an established rock damage accumulation model that comprehensively considers the preapplied static load, impact peak value, impact frequency, and impact times. Abstract To study the rock damage mechanism under high static loading and superimposed medium strain rate cyclic impact loading, a series ...

The impact of multistage fluid and diagenetic environmental coupling on the development of deep clastic rock reservoirs: A case from the Zhuhai Formation, Wenchang A Sag, Zhujiangkou Basin

open access: yesEnergy Exploration & Exploitation
Fluid modification critically affects the quality of clastic rock reservoirs. At present, the mechanism of multistage fluid alteration in clastic rock reservoirs under deep burial conditions is still a matter of debate.
