Millimeter wave analysis of the dielectric properties of oil shales [PDF]
Natural sedimentation processes give rise to fine layers in shales. If these layers alternate between organic-rich and organic-poor sediments, then the contrast in dielectric properties gives rise to an effective birefringence as the presence of hydrocarbons suppresses the dielectric constant of the host rock.

Elastic Properties of Confined Fluids from Molecular Modeling to Ultrasonic Experiments on Porous Solids [PDF]
Fluids confined in nanopores are ubiquitous in nature and technology. In recent years, the interest in confined fluids has grown, driven by research on unconventional hydrocarbon resources -- shale gas and shale oil, much of which are confined in nanopores.

Elastic, strength, and fracture properties of Marcellus shale [PDF]
Shale, a fine-grained sedimentary rock, is the key source rock for many of the world's most important oil and natural gas deposits. A deep understanding of the mechanical properties of shale is of vital importance in various geotechnical applications, including oil and gas exploitation.

Quantitative Prediction of Natural Fractures in Shale Oil Reservoirs
Natural fractures are the key factors controlling the enrichment of shale oil. It is of great significance to clarify the distribution of natural fractures to guide the selection of sweet spots for shale oil.

Impact of Inorganic Solutes’ Release in Groundwater during Oil Shale In Situ Exploitation
Oil shale can produce oil and shale gas by heating the oil shale at 300–500 °C. The high temperature and the release of organic matter can change the physical and mechanical properties of rocks and make the originally tight impervious layer become a ...

Apparent Liquid Permeability in Mixed-Wet Shale Permeable Media [PDF]
Apparent liquid permeability (ALP) in ultra-confined permeable media is primarily governed by the pore confinement and fluid-rock interactions. A new ALP model is required to predict the interactive effect of the above two on the flow in mixed-wet, heterogeneous nanoporous media.

Seismic Wave Scattering and Dissipation in Fractured Shales [PDF]
Seismic attenuation in granular porous media is of paramount importance in rock physics and seismology. Unlike sandstones, shales are mixtures of sand grains and clays with extremely low porosity and permeability. Swelling of clays upon wetting induce micro-cracks at grain-clay interfaces and results in the strong elastic wave scattering.

A 4D synchrotron X-ray tomography study of the formation of hydrocarbon migration pathways in heated organic-rich shale [PDF]
Recovery of oil from oil shales and the natural primary migration of hydrocarbons are closely related processes that have received renewed interests in recent years because of the ever tightening supply of conventional hydrocarbons and the growing production of hydrocarbons from low permeability tight rocks.
