Mechanical Behaviors of an Anisotropic Shale Rock

Shale Energy Engineering 2014, 2014
Shale gas is becoming an increasingly important energy source worldwide. The geomechanical properties of shale rocks can have a major impact on the efficiency of shale gas exploration. This paper studies the mineralogical and mechanical characteristics of a typical gas shale in Ohio, USA.

On the Adsorption Properties of Shale Rocks

Proceedings, 2016
The inherent complexity of shale rocks together with their relatively low adsorption capacity as compared to commercial adsorbents represent a new scientific and technical challenge in the study of adsorption at supercritical conditions. Some of these issues are discussed in this paper.

Computational Rock Physics for Shales

Proceedings, 2010
The emerging imaging and computing technology is especially effective for gas-shale where the knowledge and understanding of the internal pore architecture (down to 3 nanometer scale) is crucial for determining connected vs. unconnected porosity, TOC distribution and maturity, pore size distribution, mineralogy, sample-scale heterogeneities, computing ...

Adhesion of polymers to shale rock surfaces

Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 1973
AbstractIn the course of a project on the application of polymers for rock bonding and reinforcement of coal mine structures, the adhesion of epoxy resins to shale mine rock was studied by infrared and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Two types of bonding were identified: primary bonds between silicates and polymer, and hydrogen bonds from organic compounds on ...

Rock physics of the Eagle Ford Shale

SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 2015, 2015
The amplitude variation with offset (AVO) of seismic waves reflected from an interface between two geological layers is a function of the P-velocity, S-velocity, and density of the layers, and may be used to obtain information on lithology, porosity, fluid content, etc.

Fine-grained rocks: Shales or physilites

Sedimentary Geology, 1980
Abstract Fine-grained sediments and rocks containing a high percentage of phyllosilicate minerals have never been satisfactorily classified. Rocks names are poorly defined. The definition of many terms such as clay, clay mineral and shale are logically inconsistent.

Rock physics modelling of shale diagenesis

Petroleum Geoscience, 2006
A model for estimating the effective anisotropic properties of cemented shales is presented. The model is based on two mathematical methods for estimation of effective properties of a composite medium; a self-consistent approximation and a differential effective medium model.

Shale Rock Properties - Extending the Scope of Rock Physics

Proceedings, 2013
Traditionally, the emphasis of rock physics in the Petroleum Industry has been on the elastic properties of rocks, with the major area of application in the description and characterisation of reservoirs. The search for unconventional resources does not only lead to an extension of the discipline to the description of less porous and quite often ...

Unsaturated rock mechanics applied to a low-porosity shale

Engineering Geology, 2008
This article presents the results of tests carried out on partially saturated shale samples: a water retention curve was measured, and the evolutions of mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength and tangent modulus) with suction were studied by means of uniaxial compression tests.

The flow characteristics of shale gas through shale rock matrix in nano-scale and water imbibition on shale sheets

SCIENTIA SINICA Technologica, 2016
