Focus on Shallow Gas Systems

open access: yesProceedings, 2014
Recent exploration activities in two of the largest deltas in the world, the still active Nile delta and the Cenozoic Southern North Sea (SNS) deltas, proved the potential of shallow gas resources. However, shallow gas production is still limited due to a lack of understanding of this gas system.

Shallow Gas and Gas Seepages: A Dynamic Process?

open access: yes, 1990
Because of the implications of shallow gas accumulations to drilling and the integrity of platform foundations, it is important to determine whether gas accumulations can be considered as effectively static, unchanging for the duration of offshore operations, or dynamic.

The origins of shallow gas

Continental Shelf Research, 1992
Abstract In this paper the authors explain the biogenic and petrogenic origin of gas in marine sediments in non-technical terms. In such sediments methane arises from bacteriological reduction of organic matter and by geochemical transformation of buried biota.

Well Design for Shallow Gas

SPE/IADC Drilling Conference, 1995
Abstract Shallow gas and its associated operational procedures have been the subject of much opinionated debate. Previous work in the area has focused either on regulatory issues or on the steps that can be taken while drilling to minimise the consequences of a shallow gas kick.

The Causes of Shallow Gas Kicks

SPE/IADC Drilling Conference, 1987
ABSTRACT Shallow gas blowouts have occurred worldwide. Short casing strings and low fracture gradients prohibit holding back-pressure, and wells can only be diverted. Under these conditions well control procedures are much less certain, and risk of cratering and loss of well is high. This places a great emphasis on kick prevention.

A Shallow Gas Research Program

IADC/SPE Drilling Conference, 1988
Abstract Operational problems associated with the occurence of shallow gas in offshore drilling led Statoil to initiate a massive research program. The program consisted of the following subprojects: Revised drilling procedures, shallow gas drainage, multistage cementing, gas tight cement, diverter systems, rig ventilation systems and

Rotifers colonising sediments with shallow gas hydrates

Naturwissenschaften, 2003
Rotifers, one of the smallest metazoans, are only seldom found in marine environments. Surprisingly, we discovered high abundances of at least two new species of rotifers settling in anoxic and highly sulphidic sediments associated with shallow gas hydrates (GH) at the southern crest of Hydrate Ridge off Oregon, NE Pacific, in a water depth of about ...

Shallow gas: an overview

Continental Shelf Research, 1992
Abstract The above notes are included to give an overview of the subject of shallow gas in marine sediments. While the following papers provide a major step forward in our understanding of the subject, there are still many questions left to be answered.

Background concentrations of Argon-39 in shallow soil gas

Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, 2021
While radioisotopes of noble gases are known to be indicators of underground nuclear explosions (UNE), McIntyre et al. (2017) was the first to report the presence of 39Ar in shallow soil gas in association with a decades old UNE. While this finding hinted at the potential application of 39Ar to be used as an indicator of a UNE, doing so would also ...

Shallow Gas and Shallow Water Flow Induced by Natural Gas Hydrate Dissociation in Deep Water Sediments

Offshore Technology Conference, 2017
Abstract A heat transfer model in NGH sediments during drilling fluid deep-circulation and a dynamics model of NGH decomposition, in which the temperature-difference driving process is mainly considered, are established to evaluate NGH dissociation and gas and water production during deep-sediment penetration.
