Edge Constrained DSM Refinement Based on Shading From High-Resolution Multiview Satellite Images

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
Surface refinement with shading information is a popular approach to recover fine details from the initial surfaces reconstructed from multiview stereo (MVS) methods. However, the existence of discontinuity areas challenges these methods in urban scenes.

Microstructure Modification of Additively Manufactured Mo–9Si–8B by Annealing and Its Effects on High‐Temperature Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Postbuild annealing systematically modifies the phase fractions and morphology of EB‐PBF processed Mo–9Si–8B. Quantitative microstructure–property correlations reveal how controlled phase evolution enhances high‐temperature compressive strength and creep resistance.

Enhanced Topography Models for Selected Lunar South Pole Regions with Shape-from-Shading

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal
High-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) are an important resource both for lunar science and for human and robotic exploration. Photoclinometry, or Shape-from-Shading (SfS), is particularly well adapted to producing highly resolved DEMs even ...

Enhanced Ultrasound Transmission Through Aberration Layers Using Space‐Coiling Acoustic Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Enhancing ultrasound transmission through an aberration layer exhibiting mismatched impedance with the surrounding medium possesses great implications in imaging and treatment. In this study, we show that a space‐coiling acoustic metamaterial with judiciously tailored structural profile can help improve impedance matching.

Discrepancies Between Micro Versus Macroscale Viscoelastic Properties in a Microplastic‐Tissue Composite Model

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores the discrepancies between bulk mechanics and spatial mapping in a tissue‐mimetic hydrogel model. Microplastic particles create localized stiff mechanical microenvironments that are detectable by cellular‐scale nanoindentation but leave bulk properties unchanged as measured by rheology.

Controlling Grain Growth in Powder Bed Fusion of Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia Using Femtosecond Lasers: Challenges and Methodological Insights

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Binder‐free laser powder bed fusion of 8YSZ with a femtosecond laser is used to map process windows linking scan strategy, heat accumulation, and grain growth. Time‐resolved thermography and simulations reveal thermal regimes that enable continuous, vitrified, and fine‐grained 8YSZ surface layers without absorptive additives and demonstrate ...

Local Shape Approximation from Shading

open access: yes, 1992
Shading can be used as an independent cue for exact shape recovery, or it can be used as a supplementary cue for shape interpolation between features, whose depth is known from other cues.
