Optimal shape design for divertors
International Journal of Computational Science and Engineering, 2014Owing to the complex physics of the plasma edge, numerical simulation tools are indispensable for the evaluation of novel divertor concepts. Simulation-based divertor design is computationally extremely expensive, however, not in the least due to the large number of design variables.

A Shape Optimal Design Methodology for Packaging Design
Journal of Electronic Packaging, 1992Shape optimal design methodology has been used as a design tool in the automotive and aerospace industries for quite some time now. In the present work the hybrid natural shape optimal design approach is used along with a nonlinear programming (NLP) technique to find the optimal shapes of electronic packaging components.

The early shaping of participatory design at PDC
Proceedings of the 14th Participatory Design Conference: Short Papers, Interactive Exhibitions, Workshops - Volume 2, 2016For 25 years the Participatory Design Conference (PDC) has been concerned with the understanding and development of Participatory Design in theory and practice. The main contribution of this paper is an informed understanding of how the participatory design tradition formed the early PDC community and how the PDC community's understanding of PD ...

Design of the unimodular shaping filter
IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 1991A unimodular shaping filter for noisy input is designed. It is stable, and shapes the wavelet into (a) the desired output with least squares error and (b) the actual output with a unit area. Stability was achieved by using the prewhitening parameter. A numerical example shows that the prewhitening parameter reduces the error energy in the unimodular ...

Design for shape control of tensegrities
2006 American Control Conference, 2006This paper proposes and demonstrates procedures to optimally design tensegrity structures actuation, based on closed loop shape control requirements, while at the same time a feasible path for realizing a desired shape is synthesized. The procedures are employing different optimization based formulations of a set of requirements needed for shape ...

Shape grammars are classified into different types according to restrictions on rules. The predictabilities of the outcomes and behaviors of these different types of shape grammars are examined. Understanding the predictabilities of grammars is central to the successful design of shape grammars in creative design applications.

Applied Optics, 1995
Several options for beam-shaping optics are presented, among them a novel single-element solution with toroidal surfaces in which the far-field angular spread of the outgoing beam is the average of the incoming divergences. The beam-shaping elements are judged with respect to their positioning and fabrication tolerances.

Numerical Heat Transfer, Part B: Fundamentals, 2002
Designers often need to find the shape of body that achieves specified design objectives. The classic problem of this type is to find the airfoil shape that leads to the desired distribution of surface pressure. This article describes a method for solving such problems that is inexpensive, robust, and a simple extension to existing computational fluid ...

Designer Interaction in Shape Optimal Design
1988Designer/user interaction plays an important role in the shape optimization of boundaries of continuum structures. Some principles of interaction are discussed taking the shape optimization of a hole in a tall beam as an example.

Shaping the Complexity of a Design
Design Engineering, 2002This paper presents an introduction to concepts of complexity in support of assembly-oriented design, to guide the designer in creating a product with the most effective balance of manufacturing and assembly difficulty. The goal is to provide the designer with such information throughout the design process so that an efficient design is produced in the
