A New Adaptive Focus Measure for Shape From Focus

Procedings of the British Machine Vision Conference 2008, 2008
This paper proposes a new focus measure operator for Shape From Focus to recover a dense depth map of a scene. The method can handle depth discontinuities effectively by using adaptively shaped and weighted support windows. The support window shapes and weights are determined from the image characteristics of the all-focused image of the scene. Similar

Shape from focus based on 3D structure tensor using optical microscopy

Microscopy research and technique (Print), 2020
Shape from focus (SFF) is a widely used passive optical method for 3D shape reconstruction. In SFF, a focus measure, which is used to estimate the relative focus level, plays a critical role in depth estimation.

Image focus volume enhancement in shape from focus systems

The Imaging Science Journal, 2013
AbstractThree-dimensional object reconstructions is an active research area in digital imaging. In shape from focus approach, erroneous focus measurements result in inaccuracy in the depth map reconstruction of 2D object. Conventionally, to enhance the image focus volume, focus values are aggregated within a window, which is a linear filtering approach.

Observability of shape from focus

Proceedings of the 37th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (Cat. No.98CH36171), 2002
We consider a closed-loop system consisting of a commercial video camera with auto-focus. We view the position of the lens as the controlled input, the brightness array on the CCD sensor as the measured output, and the auto-focus' task to maintain a region of the image "in focus".

Accurate shape from focus based on focus adjustment in optical microscopy

Microscopy Research and Technique, 2008
AbstractOptical microscopy allows a magnified view of the sample while decreasing the depth of focus. Although the acquired images from limited depth of field have both blurred and focused regions, they can provide depth information. The technique to estimate the depth and 3D shape of an object from the images of the same sample obtained at different ...

Optimal Sampling for Shape from Focus by Using Gaussian Process Regression

IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics, 2020
Shape from Focus (SFF) is one of passive optical methods for estimating 3D shape of an object. In SFF, a large number of 2D images with different focus levels are required.

Shape From Focus Using Optimization Technique

2006 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics Speed and Signal Processing Proceedings, 2006
Three dimensional (3D) shape recovery using shape from focus (SFF) is presented as an optimization problem, i.e., maximization of the focus measure in the 3D image volume. The whole image volume (sequence) is divided into a number of sub image volumes.

Shape from Focus.

1989
Abstract: "Rough surfaces pose a challenging shape extraction problem. Images of rough surfaces are often characterized by high frequency intensity variations, and it is difficult to perceive the shapes of these surfaces from their images. The shape-from-focus method described in this paper uses different focus levels to obtain a sequence of object ...

Shape from focus using statistics methods

2017 International Smart Cities Conference (ISC2), 2017
Shape from focus technique can be used in the computer monocular vision, which is widely applied in the smart transportation. In this study, we proposed a novel directional statistics based focus measure for shape from focus computation. We first compute the standard deviation σ and the mean value μ in the directional neighborhood.

Shape from focus using kernel regression

2009 16th IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2009
In conventional focus measures, focus values are locally aggregated to suppress the noise and to obtain better depth maps. However, this enlarges the difference between focus values of two consecutive frames which results in inaccurate shape. In this paper, we propose a nonparametric approach for 3D shape from image focus by applying an unsupervised ...
