From Shading to Local Shape [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 2015
We develop a framework for extracting a concise representation of the shape information available from diffuse shading in a small image patch. This produces a mid-level scene descriptor, comprised of local shape distributions that are inferred separately at every image patch across multiple scales.

Applying Albedo Estimation and Implicit Neural Representations to Well-Posed Shape From Shading

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2023
We present a method that improves the accuracy of depth maps by combining albedo estimation and implicit neural representations to the well-posed shape from shading.

Is countershading camouflage robust to lighting change due to weather? [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2018
Countershading is a pattern of coloration thought to have evolved in order to implement camouflage. By adopting a pattern of coloration that makes the surface facing towards the sun darker and the surface facing away from the sun lighter, the overall ...

Interactions between luminance and colour signals : effects on shape [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This research was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).Although luminance and color are thought to be processed independently at early stages of visual processing, there is evidence that they interact at later ...

Countershading Camouflage: Exploiting Photons to Break Shape-From-Shading Inference [PDF]

open access: yesi-Perception, 2014
Animal camouflage is a paradigmatic example of evolution by natural selection, and can only be understood in terms of adaptation to deceive the brains of potential predators and to the environment.

SREVAS: Shading Based Surface Refinement under Varying Albedo and Specularity

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
Shape-from-shading and stereo vision are two complementary methods to reconstruct 3D surface from images. Stereo vision can reconstruct the overall shape well but is vulnerable in texture-less and non-Lambertian areas where shape-from-shading can recover

High Resolution Digital Terrain Models of Mercury

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
We refined our Shape from Shading (SfS) algorithm, which has previously been used to create digital terrain models (DTMs) of the Lunar and Martian surfaces, to generate high-resolution DTMs of Mercury from MESSENGER imagery.

The extraction of depth structure from shading and texture in the macaque brain. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2009
We used contrast-agent enhanced functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in the alert monkey to map the cortical regions involved in the extraction of 3D shape from the monocular static cues, texture and shading.

An Evaluation Study of Shading Devices and Their Impact on the Aesthetic Perception vs. Their Energy Efficiency

open access: yesJournal of Facade Design and Engineering, 2023
Sunlight control tools, such as shading devices, are used to improve buildings' thermal and visual conditions. One of the concerns about using shading devices is their potential to harm the visual appearance of buildings.

Depth Recovery of Complex Surfaces from Texture-less Pair of Stereo Images

open access: yesELCVIA Electronic Letters on Computer Vision and Image Analysis, 2009
In this paper, a novel framework is presented to recover the 3-D shape information of a complex surface using its texture-less pair of stereo images.
