Interweaving Grammar: Reconfiguring Vernacular Structure through Parametric Shape Grammar

International Journal of Architectural Computing, 2010
This paper re-examines the interweaving method to demonstrate how architectural computation can reinterpret the advantages of this traditional crafting techniques for its geometrical compatibility and rule generativity. Firstly, the technique analyzes and reconfigures load distribution of a traditional interwoven surface to mimic its structural ...

A whole-grammar implementation of shape grammars for designers

Artificial Intelligence for Engineering Design, Analysis and Manufacturing, 2018
AbstractI present an implementation of shape grammars that is aimed at supporting designers. It has two parts: a grammar editor and a stand-alone interpreter. The editor is the modeling application Rhinoceros3d using Python scripts. The interpreter is general, is three-dimensional, and supports subshape detection.

Designing a Shape Grammar

1998
Shape grammars are classified into different types according to restrictions on rules. The predictabilities of the outcomes and behaviors of these different types of shape grammars are examined. Understanding the predictabilities of grammars is central to the successful design of shape grammars in creative design applications.

Classifications of Shape Grammars

2017
Since shape grammars were first described about forty five years ago, several types of grammars have emerged. The goal of this paper is to provide a framework that gathers together the main existing types of grammars. The categorization is preceded by a glossary of 19 terms related to shape grammars.

Shape and Shape Grammars: A Pictorial Model

1975
This study deals with the definition of shape, relations on shares, and the generation of shapes by shape grammars. The development in this chapter is pictorial. The formal counterparts of the ideas presented here are given in Chapter 2.

Shape and Shape Grammars: A Formal Model

1975
The formal counterparts of the pictorial models of shape and shape grammars presented in Chapter 1 are developed in this chapter. Formal definitions for 2-dimensional, rectilinear shapes and shape grammars generating languages of 2-dimensional, rectilinear shapes are given. The presentation of this chapter is self-contained.
