Topology and Material Optimization in Ultra‐Soft Magneto‐Active Structures: Making Advantage of Residual Anisotropies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Residual magnetization induces pronounced mechanical anisotropy in ultra‐soft magnetorheological elastomers, shaping deformation and actuation even without external magnetic fields. This study introduces a computational‐experimental framework integrating magneto‐mechanical coupling into topology optimization for designing soft magnetic actuators with ...

Fast Fourier Transform Ensemble Kalman Filter with Application to a Coupled Atmosphere-Wildland Fire Model

open access: yes, 2010
We propose a new type of the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF), which uses the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) for covariance estimation from a very small ensemble with automatic tapering, and for a fast computation of the analysis ensemble by convolution ...

Deployable 3D‐Printed Vascular Stent with Surface‐Catalysed Endogenous Nitric Oxide Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A deployable 3D‐printed vascular stent was fabricated with surface‐catalyzed endogenous nitric oxide generation, representing a promising new direction for stent development. The stent can be remotely controlled by magnetic force in its compressed state and fully deployed at the target site using an untethered heat source, potentially eliminating the ...

Photochemical Fuel Carrier Molecules for Robotic Embodied Energy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We designed a novel fuel carrier photoresponsive molecule for on‐demand energy storage and release. Carrier molecules undergo bond scission under UV light to release chemical fuel and locally generate propulsive Marangoni flows. We demonstrate this photochemical embodied energy strategy in small‐scale robots and active matter systems, enabling ...

The Control Efficiency Analysis of Asymmetry Transmutation forFolding Wing Morphing Aircraft

open access: yesHangkong gongcheng jinzhan, 2018
Folding wing morphing aircraft can alter their shape largely which causes the aerodynamic parameters change significantly. A control scheme that using asymmetric morphing as a control input is proposed in this paper to investigate the control efficiency ...

Liquids as Reinforcements for Anisotropic and Tough Soft Matter Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid metal droplets are shaped and oriented within soft elastomers to create all‐soft matter composites with programmable mechanical anisotropy. These liquid inclusions act as fiber‐like reinforcements, enabling directional stiffness, enhanced toughness, and controlled crack steering under extreme deformation, offering new routes to resilient soft ...

Hierarchically self-morphing structure through 4D printing

open access: yesVirtual and Physical Prototyping, 2017
Hierarchical self-morphing refers to the concurrent global and local changes in shape or structure. Previous research works have demonstrated 3D printed self-morphing structures and the sequential folding/unfolding behaviours.

On the influence of geometry updating on modal correlation of brake components. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In most industries dealing with vibration, test/analysis correlation of modal properties is considered a key aspect of the design process. The success of test/analysis methods however often show mixed results.

Two‐Way Shape Memory Polymer Composite Gripper for Adaptive Robotic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A two‐way shape memory polymer (SMP) composite is developed with intrinsic shape‐changing capability driven solely by temperature, eliminating external actuation loads. Embedding the SMP in a low‐stiffness elastomeric matrix enabled reversible transformations during heating and cooling cycles.
