The jamming transition phenomenon refers to the change in stiffness of a powder as its density changes. As a familiar example, vacuum-packed coffee grounds are hard, but when opened to allow air into the package and the density is reduced, the grounds ...

Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Three-Dimensional Constitutive Model Considering Transformation-Induced Damage and Resulting Fatigue Failure in Shape Memory Alloys [PDF]
In this work, a constitutive model is developed that describe the behavior of shape memory alloys undergoing a large number of cycles, developing internal damage, and eventually failing.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

A Thermodynamic Constitutive Model for Stress Induced Phase Transformation in Shape Memory Alloys
In this paper a thermodynamic constitutive model is developed for stress induced phase transformation in single crystalline and polycrystalline shape memory alloys (SMAs). Volume fractions of different martensite variants are chosen as internal variables

Thermoelastic properties on Cu-Zn-Al shape memory springs
This paper present a thermomechanical study of actuators in form of helical springs made from shape memory alloy wires that can work as actuator and/or as sensor. These abilities are due to the martensitic transformation.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Shape and director-field transformation of tactoids [PDF]
Tactoids are droplets of a nematic phase that under suitable conditions form in dispersions of elongated colloidal particles. We theoretically study the shape and the director-field configuration of such droplets for the case where a planar anchoring of the director field to the interface is favored. A minimum of four regimes can be identified in which
