Anatomy of a shark attack

open access: yesJournal of Wilderness Medicine, 1992
The victim swam confidently and serenely in clear, tropical waters, unaware of the terror she was about to experience. Suddenly, she found herself in a desperate struggle for life. With every ounce of strength she could muster, she fought to free herself from the merciless predator which had, without provocation, violently attacked.

Predicting Historical Populations and Evaluating Shifting Baselines of Traditionally Exploited Fisheries

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Development of data‐intensive stock assessment and ecosystem‐based models has improved our understanding of shifting species abundance in response to fishing, ocean ecology, and species interactions. Along with this analytical progress is evidence that many stocks lack data required for complex models, resulting in data‐limited options for ...

Hooking efficiencies of SMART drumlines and their possible deployment rates vs gillnets for bather protection

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
IntroductionFor 87 years, gillnets have been deployed off up to 51 beaches in New South Wales, Australia, to reduce bites on humans by white (Carcharodon carcharias), bull (Carcharhinus leucas), and tiger (Galeocerdo cuvier) sharks. Recently, to minimise

Analysis of Cookiecutter shark Isistius spp. (Squaliformes; Dalatiidae) bites in cetaceans (Mammalia; Cetacea) on the Bahia coast, northeastern Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesBiotemas, 2007
Few studies have registered signs of mutilation on cetaceans in Brazil, especially from shark attacks. This work describes interactions between cookiecutter sharks Isistius spp.

Insights into the structure of grey reef shark aggregation, Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos (Bleeker, 1856), in two distinct channels of the Maldivian archipelago, Indian Ocean

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The grey reef shark Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos is one of the most frequently encountered reef‐associated shark species in the Maldives, yet very little is known about its local size structure or population dynamics. This study provides new insights into two aggregations of C.

The state of knowledge on four families of Syngnathoidei fishes (Teleostei: Syngnathiformes): Aulostomidae, Centriscidae, Fistulariidae and Solenostomidae

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Knowledge on the ecology and life‐history traits of coastal marine species is vital to inform their conservation and management, especially as their coastal habitats come under increasing threats. However, such data have never been collated for four of the five families in the suborder Syngnathoidei—the close relatives of the better‐studied ...

The Talion law “tooth for a tooth”: self-defense as a motivation for shark bites on human aggressors

open access: yesFrontiers in Conservation Science
The concept of “self-defense,” based on aggression by one individual responding to an initial aggression by another, has been observed in several animal taxa such as birds and terrestrial mammals but never documented in detail in sharks. Based on a multi-

Molecular insights into electroreceptor ribbon synapses from differential gene expression in sturgeon lateral line organs

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
The expression of various genes involved in synapse development, stability and/or function was studied in developing mechanosensory neuromasts and electrosensory ampullary organs in sterlet sturgeon. Most were shared, including Slc17a8, Slc1a3 and Nrxn3, but Cbln18 was neuromast‐restricted and Tulp1 was ampullary organ‐restricted.
