From Shark Finning to Shark Fishing: a Strategy for the U.S. & EU to Combat Shark Finning in China & Hong Kong [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Globally, the shark population is under extreme stress, primarily due to the rise of China and a growing middle class with a taste for a cultural dish: shark fin soup.

Assessing the evolutionary distinctiveness of a highly threatened plant group: The urgency to preserve a unique lineage of evolution in Brazil

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Brazil's diverse flora is under several threats, with many unique lineages facing extinction, particularly in biodiverse regions like the Cerrado and campo rupestre. This study sheds light on the conservation needs of Cambessedesia (Melastomataceae), an endemic genus with 95% of its species endangered, using an approach to rank and prioritise species ...

New geographic boundaries of marine fishes - are we aware?

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2015
The boundaries for geographic distributions of species are being redesigned continuously, as referred by several authors. In recent years, tropical and sub-tropical fish species have been registered for the first time in the coast of Portugal.

Breaking down seagrass fragmentation in a marine heatwave impacted World Heritage Area

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Habitat fragmentation can exacerbate the impacts of habitat loss but is rarely quantified in marine environments. Using satellite‐derived habitat maps, we identify widespread seagrass fragmentation following a marine heatwave that contributed to a dramatic shift in seascape structure in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area.

Comparing convolutional neural network and random forest for benthic habitat mapping in Apollo Marine Park

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
A comparison of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Random Forest (RF) model predictions of benthic habitats within Apollo Marine Park. The CNN (left) and RF (right) classification maps show the spatial distribution of three habitat types: high energy circalittoral rock with seabed‐covering sponges, low complexity circalittoral rock with non‐crowded

Longline-caught blue shark (Prionace glauca): factors affecting the numbers available for live release* [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The blue shark (Prionace glauca) is an oceanic species that occurs in temperate and tropical waters around the globe (Robins and Ray, 1986). This species is a major bycatch of pelagic longline fleets that operate to supply the world’s growing demand for

Programmed unmanned aerial vehicles show great potential for monitoring marine megafauna in specific areas of interest

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Targeted conservation measures are contingent on robust knowledge of spatio‐temporal animal distribution in areas of interest. We explore unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) transect monitoring as a novel method for standardized digital aerial surveys of marine megafauna by investigating the fine‐resolution spatio‐temporal distribution of harbour porpoises ...

The power of expressed humility: Early stage investors' reaction to humble entrepreneurs

open access: yesStrategic Entrepreneurship Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Research Summary We examine how entrepreneur‐expressed humility affects early stage investors' willingness to fund new ventures. In pitching contexts where investors rely on relational cues and implicit prototypes of entrepreneurs, we theorize three distinct pathways through which expressed humility shapes funding decisions. First, building on

Conservation Biology of Elasmobranchs [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
Elasmobranchs are vital and valuable components of the marine biota. From an ecological perspective they occupy the role of top predators within marine food webs, providing a regulatory control that helps balance the ecosystem.
