An integrated baseline assessment of reef-associated sharks around Saba (Dutch Caribbean), combining three methods: stereo-BRUVs, telemetry and citizen science

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science
The Exclusive Economic Zone of Saba (Dutch Windward Islands) has been designated Yarari Marine Mammal and Shark Sanctuary. However, to effectively conserve sharks, a baseline on their diversity and spatiotemporal distribution is required.

Description of large, well‐preserved Enchodus specimens from the Bearpaw Formation of Alberta, Canada

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Fishes of the genus Enchodus were abundant and cosmopolitan in the Late Cretaceous, but are primarily known from isolated remains in Canada. Four well‐preserved fish skulls were recovered in recent years from ammolite mines sampling the Bearpaw Formation of Southern Alberta, and are here referred to Enchodus petrosus Cope, 1874.

Scalloped hammerhead sharks swim on their side with diel shifts in roll magnitude and periodicity

open access: yesAnimal Biotelemetry, 2020
Background Great hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna mokarran) routinely swim on their sides and periodically roll from side to side. A previous study used wind tunnel tests with a rigid model hammerhead shark to demonstrate that the rolling behavior could ...

The ORCA‐TWIN qCMOS Experiment I. Science Case and Commissioning at Calar Alto Observatory

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We describe a pilot study to explore a new generation of fast and low noise CMOS image sensors for time domain astronomy, using two remote telescopes with a baseline of 1635 km. The experiment involves direct imaging with novel qCMOS image sensor technology that combines fast readout with sub‐electron readout noise.

Seabirds mediate intraguild and competitive interactions in a shark community

open access: yesEcosphere
Intraguild predation (IGP) and competition significantly influence resource utilization patterns among sympatric species. The presence of alternative prey (consumed only by intraguild [IG] predators and not IG prey) may promote coexistence and have a ...

Species Misidentification in Drone-Based Shark Surveillance and Implications for Beach Management

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Drone-based shark surveillance has been implemented as a non-lethal mitigation method to minimise the risk of human–shark interactions along beaches of New South Wales (NSW), Australia.

How wildlife respond to tropical cyclones: short‐term tactics and long‐term impacts

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT From butterflies to lizards and from sharks to seabirds, wildlife exhibit tactics to survive the impacts of tropical cyclones, also known as hurricanes, cyclones, or typhoons depending on where they occur. Some species seek refuge during the storm by moving, some remain in place and ride it out, and others move longer distances, avoiding the ...

A Shark–Human Chimera [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Chemistry, 2018
My work in monoclonal antibody development for diagnostic applications began in the early 1980s at the University of Melbourne, only a few years after the groundbreaking work of Kohler and Milstein. Since then, antibody engineering technologies have evolved, through mouse–human chimeras, fully humanized antibodies, phage display, and single-chain ...

The Impact of Sustainability Labelling on Consumers' Evaluation and Choice of Food Products: A Systematic Literature Review

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The last five years of research on sustainability labelling, reported in 175 journal articles, documents its effectiveness in increasing consumer choices of more sustainable food products. Some sustainability labels come out as stronger than others and their impact varies across products, countries, and individual consumers, depending on label

Dietary partitioning mediates species coexistence in the high seas area of northwest Pacific

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Niche partitioning, manifesting along various axes of the ecological niche, is a fundamental mechanism mediating species coexistence in a system. However, the emergence of many species in marine ecosystems would face considerable constraints in achieving coexistence through spatiotemporal differentiation mechanisms under the framework of niche ...
