Physics of runaway electrons with Shattered Pellet Injection at JET [PDF]

open access: possible, 2021
Runaway electrons (RE) are one of the consequences of tokamak plasma disruptions. They may form multi-MA beams of electrons up to several MeV. Avoidance or suppression of such beams is therefore required to ensure reliable operation of future tokamaks. Shattered Pellet Injection (SPI) is the disruption and runaway mitigation method planned for ITER.

Development of a two-barrel shattered pellet injection system for HL-3

Journal of Instrumentation
Abstract Faced with plasma disruption challenges, Shattered Pellet Injection (SPI) has validated its effectiveness as a potent mitigation strategy. Its advantage lies in the injection of a large number of impurity particles directly into the plasma core, which rapidly increases the density and alleviates the high thermal load ...

Overview of the radiated fraction and radiation asymmetries following shattered pellet injection

2020
During shattered pellet injection (SPI) shutdowns in ITER, a high fraction of the plasma thermal energy must be radiated with a moderate degree of uniformity to avoid damages to the divertor and the first wall such as melting. DIII-D, J-TEXT, JET, and KSTAR now operate SPI systems and studies have begun to assess these requirements.
