Shear thinning of colloidal dispersions

Journal of Rheology, 1998
In this paper we calculate numerically the shear induced distortion of the equilibrium microstructure in a dilute colloidal suspension. In the low density limit, our predictions both with and without hydrodynamic interactions follow the form of the Ree–Eyring equation for the shear rate dependence of the rheology.

Shear thickening-shear thinning and shear thinning-shear thickening transitions in polymeric systems

Caderno Pedagógico
This review explores the complex rheological behaviors of hydrogels, specifically focusing on shear thinning-shear thickening (PD) and the less common shear thickening-shear thinning (DP) transitions. While shear thinning (viscosity decrease with increasing shear rate) is widely utilized in applications like 3D printing and injectables, and shear ...

A Supramolecular Shear‐Thinning Anti‐Inflammatory Steroid Hydrogel

Advanced Materials, 2016
Shear-thinning and self-healing steroid-drug-based hydrogels are presented, which exhibit rapid and complete recovery of their mechanical properties within seconds following stress-induced flow. The hydrogels release steroid drug in vivo with no visible residue when release is complete.

Shear thinning in concentrated dispersions

Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 1996
A theory is presented to predict the effective shear viscosity of concentrated dispersions in steady state shear flow as a function of the volume fraction, particle size, interparticle interactions, and shear rate. Shear thinning has been qualitatively argued to be a result of shear-induced change in microstructure, which we shall discuss in terms of ...

Rheology of Shear Thinning Polymer Solutions

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 1994
A viscometer was used to measure power law parameters K and n for aqueous solutions of (carboxymethyl)cellulose (CMC), taken from a bubble column. The results were analyzed by plotting n as a function of Log K. Literature data and the present experiments show that dilution gives a slope of -0.147 on the Log K-n plot.

Dynamic wetting of shear thinning fluids

Physics of Fluids, 2007
The impact of non-Newtonian behavior on dynamic wetting is critical since many fluids exhibit such behavior somewhere in the high-shear environment inherent in the wedge flow near a moving contact line. This impact will be different for two broad categories of non-Newtonian behavior, shear thinning, and elasticity.
