Particle-wall collision in shear thinning fluids

Experiments in Fluids, 2005
The present study deals with the measurements of the impact wi and rebound wr velocities of steel particles in different fluids colliding with a rigid wall. The results are presented in terms of the coefficient of restitution e=wr/wi as a function of the Stokes number (ratio between the particle inertia and the viscous forces).

The Dean instability for shear-thinning fluids

Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, 2013
We investigate the Dean instability for a generalised Newtonian fluid which satisfies an approximately power-law viscosity model, albeit modified to incorporate a low-shear Newtonian plateau. Infinite aspect ratio linear stability results are presented for both a narrow-gap width and a finite radius of curvature.

Nonlinear Electrophoresis of Microparticles in Shear Thinning Fluids

Langmuir
The nonlinear electric field dependence of particle electrophoresis has been demonstrated to occur in Newtonian fluids for highly charged particles under large electric fields. It has also been predicted to arise from the rheological effects of non-Newtonian fluids even at small electric fields.

Saffman-Taylor instability of shear thinning fluids

Physics of Fluids, 2007
A theoretical study of the Saffman-Taylor instability criterion in a Hele-Shaw cell when an inviscid fluid pushes a shear thinning fluid, is presented. The shear thinning fluid model consists of three independent fluids, two of which are Newtonian while the viscosity of the third is linearly dependent of the shear rate. The corresponding Darcy’s law is

Remarks on non‐shear thinning elastic fluids

Polymer Engineering & Science, 1986
AbstractIn response to difficulties encountered in measuring and reproducing the flow properties of Boger fluids (dilute solutions of polyarcylamide in corn syrup), Choplin, et al. proposed it particular variety of lubricant (Emkarox) and also solutions of polyacrylamide (Pusher 700) in mixtures of glycerine and water as better model fluids for molten ...

Flow of shear-thinning fluids in gaps

1988
Calculation procedures are presented for the laminar flow of generalized Newtonian fluids through an eccentric axial gap and through an axisymmetric casing of arbitrary shape. Experimental and numerical data are compared for a fluid with the viscosity function described by the Ellis law. Good agreement is found in both cases.

Molecular Tribology of Fluid Lubrication: Shear Thinning

Tribology Transactions, 1992
An investigation of the boundary layer viscosity of films of non-polar liquid lubricants, hexadecane and a silicone oil, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, confined between parallel atomically smooth single crystals of Muscovite mica, is reported. The effective viscosity (ηeff) showed a zone of linear response and a second zone of extreme shear thinning. In

Transport control of shear‐thinning fluids within corrugated microannulus

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2008
AbstractThe rheological characteristics and volume flow rates (up to the second order) of shear‐thinning fluids inside the transversely corrugated microannuli were obtained by using the verified fluid model and boundary perturbation method. Our results show that the temperature as well as wavy‐roughness could influence the transport of the shear ...

Breakup dynamics of toroidal droplets in shear-thinning fluids

Physical Review E, 2018
We use toroidal droplets to study the breakup dynamics of a Newtonian liquid jet in the presence of rheologically nonlinear materials. We find that the droplets resist breakup for times that are longer than those in the presence of Newtonian liquids.
