Structuring Sedimentation in a Shear-Thinning Fluid
Physical Review Letters, 2005We study the sedimentation of suspensions of monodisperse non-Brownian particles in a shear-thinning polymeric fluid. We observe the formation of particle-rich structures and show that they are associated with a well-defined flow pattern. The results suggest that the observed structuring is a consequence of particle aggregation that amplifies ...

Time-Periodic Mixing of Shear-thinning Fluids
Chemical Engineering Research and Design, 2004Mixing times and energy consumption of inelastic shear-thinning fluids in stirred vessels were experimentally investigated using time-periodic conditions. The impeller rotated initially at a speed sufficient to allow the well-mixed region around the impeller to be formed and then the impeller was stopped and turned on periodically.

Dynamic wetting of shear thinning fluids
Physics of Fluids, 2007The impact of non-Newtonian behavior on dynamic wetting is critical since many fluids exhibit such behavior somewhere in the high-shear environment inherent in the wedge flow near a moving contact line. This impact will be different for two broad categories of non-Newtonian behavior, shear thinning, and elasticity.

Close-contact melting of shear-thinning fluids
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2023This study aims at establishing a model for close-contact melting (CCM) of shear-thinning fluids. We presented a theoretical framework for predicting the variation of liquid melt film thickness and motion of unmelted solid for both Carreau and power-law fluids.

Chaotic mixing of shear‐thinning fluids
AIChE Journal, 1994AbstractThis article investigates the effect of shear‐thinning viscosity on chaotic mixing when the kinematics first begin to deviate from Newtonian flow. Computations are done for a 2‐D, time‐periodic flow between eccentric cylinders. The effectiveness of mixing is analyzed by examining the asymptotic coverage of a passive tracer, character and ...
