Molecular Tribology of Fluid Lubrication: Shear Thinning

Tribology Transactions, 1992
An investigation of the boundary layer viscosity of films of non-polar liquid lubricants, hexadecane and a silicone oil, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, confined between parallel atomically smooth single crystals of Muscovite mica, is reported. The effective viscosity (ηeff) showed a zone of linear response and a second zone of extreme shear thinning. In

Transport control of shear‐thinning fluids within corrugated microannulus

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2008
AbstractThe rheological characteristics and volume flow rates (up to the second order) of shear‐thinning fluids inside the transversely corrugated microannuli were obtained by using the verified fluid model and boundary perturbation method. Our results show that the temperature as well as wavy‐roughness could influence the transport of the shear ...

Breakup dynamics of toroidal droplets in shear-thinning fluids

Physical Review E, 2018
We use toroidal droplets to study the breakup dynamics of a Newtonian liquid jet in the presence of rheologically nonlinear materials. We find that the droplets resist breakup for times that are longer than those in the presence of Newtonian liquids.

General Shear-Thinning Dynamics of Confined Fluids

Tribology Letters, 2002
The shear properties for a number of thin fluid films under high pressure were investigated as a function of sliding velocity (shear rate) using the surface forces apparatus. It was found that the relationship between the effective viscosity ηeff and shear rate γ in the shear-thinning regime could be expressed by a simple equation, log10ηeff=C-nlog10γ,

Shear Thinning Fluid for Shallow Fracture Formation

Volume 8: Offshore Geotechnics; Petroleum Technology
Abstract Drilling fluids (water based or oil based) are used to drill wells. Water based drilling fluid utilize fresh water, seawater, or brines. Selection of optimum chemicals are critical to maximize well’s productivity and reduces drilling cost without damaging equipment or the surrounding environment.

Fluid Propulsion by Cilia in a Shear-thinning Fluid

2010
Fluid propulsion by natural cilia is governed by their asymmetric motion. For artificial cilia driven by an external force, this asymmetry comes from the shape of the applied force and the initial shape of the cilium. For shear-thinning liquids such as saliva, which are deformation rate dependent, the motion can also become asymmetric due to different ...
