The authors present a thorough discussion of the notion of finite shear deformation in continuum mechanics. Considerations are purely kinematical and geometrical. Three different definitions are examined, those of shear of material directions (change in angle between two material line elements), planar shear (change in the angle made by the normal of a

From shear thickening to shear-induced jamming
Physical Review E, 2002We show that applying shear to a suspension may lead to either thickening or permanent jamming, depending on the volume fraction of the considered suspension. Interpreting measurements of conductivity under shear, we invoke a dynamical structural transition to explain the origin of shear thickening in suspensions of non-Brownian particles.

A Lateral Wavefront Shearing Interferometer with Variable Shear
Applied Optics, 1967A lateral wavefront shearing interferometer is presented. Two diffraction gratings are used as beam splitters in the Fraunhofer planes of two successive image forming systems. Each diffraction order of the first grating forms an image of the object in an intermediate image plane.

Shear thickening-shear thinning and shear thinning-shear thickening transitions in polymeric systems
Caderno PedagógicoThis review explores the complex rheological behaviors of hydrogels, specifically focusing on shear thinning-shear thickening (PD) and the less common shear thickening-shear thinning (DP) transitions. While shear thinning (viscosity decrease with increasing shear rate) is widely utilized in applications like 3D printing and injectables, and shear ...

On the Shear Number Effect in Stratified Shear Flow
Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics, 1999The authors investigate the influence of the shear number on turbulence evolution in a stably stratified fluid. The shear number \(SK/\varepsilon\) is the ratio of a turbulence time scale \(K/\varepsilon\) to the shear time scale \(1/S\). Two series of direct numerical simulations are performed to study the role of this parameter: a moderate Reynolds ...

GPU-based shear–shear correlation calculation
Computer Physics Communications, 2014Abstract Light rays are deflected when travelling through a gravitational potential: this phenomenon is known as gravitational lensing. It causes the observed shapes of distant galaxies to be very slightly distorted by the intervening matter in the Universe, as their light travels towards us. This distortion is called cosmic shear .

Reverse shearing of shear bands in polystyrene
Journal of Materials Science, 1982Shear bands produced in polystyrene by compression can be reverse sheared by a second compression in a perpendicular direction. The net shear strain can be zero or negative. Like the forward shear, the reverse shear also produces a ridge on the surface. The height of the ridge seems to be proportional to the reverse shear strain.
