Monitoring shear deformation of sliding zone via fiber Bragg grating and particle image velocimetry

open access: yesJournal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering
Monitoring shear deformation of sliding zones is of great significance for understanding the landslide evolution mechanism, in which fiber optic strain sensing has shown great potential.

Criticality at finite strain rate in fluidized soft glassy materials

open access: yes, 2019
We study the emergence of critical dynamics in the steady shear rheology of fluidized soft glassy materials. Within a mesoscale elasto-plastic model accounting for a shear band instability, we show how an additional noise can induce a transition from ...

Four‐Point Bending Tests at High Temperatures on Commercial MgO‐C Refractory Bricks with and Without Recyclate Considering Different Carbon Contents

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Four‐point bending tests are conducted in an argon atmosphere on commercial MgO‐C brick grades with and without MgO‐C recyclate from room temperature up to 1300 °C. No detrimental effect of the MgO‐C recyclates on bending strength is found. Instead, a decisive influence of the total carbon content is observed, with lower total carbon contents ...

Instability mechanism of dangerous rock masses on bank slopes containing a single shear band under the deterioration of reservoir water

open access: yesJournal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering
Taking the Banbiyan dangerous rock mass as the focus, this study employs field investigations, model experiments, and numerical simulations to explore the instability mechanisms of dangerous rock masses on bank slopes containing a single shear band under

Simulations of Fine-Meshed Biaxial Tests with Barodesy

open access: yesGeosciences, 2018
Recent experimental studies showed that shear band development starts at the beginning of triaxial tests. In experimental testing, it is impossible to obtain a soil sample with a homogeneous void ratio.

Finite width of quasistatic shear bands [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2008
I study the average deformation rate of an amorphous material submitted to an external uniform shear strain rate, in the geometry known as the split-bottom configuration. The material is described using a stochastic model of plasticity at a mesoscopic scale.

Powder Optimization Strategies for Binder Jetting Printing of BaTiO3 and Ba0,6Sr0,4TiO3 Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Powder optimization is investigated to enable binder jetting of BaTiO3 and Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 ferroelectric ceramics. The antagonistic relationship between flowability and binder compatibility is addressed through binder impregnation of granulated powders and fumed silica addition to fine powders.

Indentation-Induced Shear Band Formation in Thin-Film Multilayers

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials, 2017
We report an exploratory investigation into the cause of shear band formation in multilayer thin films subject to nanoindentation. The material system considered here is composed of alternating aluminum (Al) and silicon carbide (SiC) nanolayers, atop a ...

Influence of an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere on Diamond‐Single‐Grain Scratching of Ti–6Al–4V

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐grain scratching of Ti–6Al–4V is investigated under controlled, oxygen‐free, and ambient atmospheres using a novel experimental setup with in situ high‐speed imaging. The approach enables direct observation of chip formation and adhesion under suppressed oxidation.
