Fluid Depletion in Shear Bands [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2012
How does pore liquid reconfigure within shear bands in wet granular media? Conventional wisdom predicts that liquid is drawn into dilating granular media. We, however, find a depletion of liquid in shear bands despite increased porosity due to dilatancy. This apparent paradox is resolved by a microscale model for liquid transport at low liquid contents

Nature of ductile shear banding under shock loading

open access: yesMicro & Nano Letters, 2021
Under shock loading, the plastic flow of polycrystalline material tends to localise into shear bands. As shear bands form, most materials dramatically lose their strain hardening property and quickly fail.

Evolution of Shear Band in Plane Strain Compression of Naturally Structured Clay with a High Sensitivity

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
The formation of the shear band is associated with the failure of soil. However, there has been relatively little investigation on the evolution of shear bands in naturally structured clay with a high sensitivity.

In Situ Generated Shear Bands in Metallic Glass Investigated by Atomic Force and Analytical Transmission Electron Microscopy

open access: yesMetals, 2022
Plastic deformation of metallic glasses performed at temperatures well below the glass transition proceeds via the formation of shear bands. In this contribution, we investigated shear bands originating from in situ tensile tests of Al88Y7Fe5 melt-spun ...

Shear bands of as-cast and semi-solid Ti48Zr27Cu6Nb5Be14 bulk metallic glass matrix composites [PDF]

open access: yesChina Foundry, 2021
The as-cast Ti48Zr27Cu6Nb5Be14 bulk metallic glass matrix composites (BMGMCs) were fabricated using a copper mold suction casting method. Then, the semi-solid BMGMC samples were obtained following an isothermal treatment (heating at 900 °C for 10 min ...

Size dependence of ductile to brittle transition of Zr-based metallic glasses under multiaxial loading

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2021
The size dependence of ductile to brittle transition of Zr-based metallic glasses was systematically investigated by small punch test. It was found that the metallic glasses with thickness ranging from 50 to 700 μm displayed an obvious transition from ...

Evolution of cracks in the shear bands of granite residual soil

open access: yesJournal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, 2022
The evolution of shear bands and cracks plays an important role in landslides. However, there is no systematic method for classification of the cracks, which can be used to analyze the evolution of cracks in shear bands.

Interface Instability in Shear-Banding Flow [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2006
We report on the spatio-temporal dynamics of the interface in shear-banding flow of a wormlike micellar system (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium nitrate in water) during a start-up experiment. Using the scattering properties of the induced structures, we demonstrate the existence of an instability of the interface between bands along the ...

In situ transmission electron microscopy studies of shear bands in a bulk metallic glass based composite [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
In situ straining transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments were performed to study the propagation of the shear bands in the Zr56.3Ti13.8Cu6.9Ni5.6Nb5.0Be12.5 bulk metallic glass based composite.

Shear-banding instability in arbitrarily inelastic granular shear flows [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2019
One prototypical instability in granular flows is the shear-banding instability, in which a uniform granular shear flow breaks into alternating bands of dense and dilute clusters of particles having low and high shear (shear stress or shear rate), respectively.
