Nature of ductile shear banding under shock loading
Under shock loading, the plastic flow of polycrystalline material tends to localise into shear bands. As shear bands form, most materials dramatically lose their strain hardening property and quickly fail.

The formation of the shear band is associated with the failure of soil. However, there has been relatively little investigation on the evolution of shear bands in naturally structured clay with a high sensitivity.

Shear-banding and microstructure of colloids in shear flow [PDF]
We shall discuss the following phenomena found in various colloidal systems in shear flow. We recently observed shear-banding in suspensions of fd-virus in a cylindrical shear cell. Small angle light scattering experiments revealed that the shear-banding transition is preceded by a relatively fast process (minutes) of nematic-to-paranematic phase ...

Plastic deformation of metallic glasses performed at temperatures well below the glass transition proceeds via the formation of shear bands. In this contribution, we investigated shear bands originating from in situ tensile tests of Al88Y7Fe5 melt-spun ...

Shear bands of as-cast and semi-solid Ti48Zr27Cu6Nb5Be14 bulk metallic glass matrix composites [PDF]
The as-cast Ti48Zr27Cu6Nb5Be14 bulk metallic glass matrix composites (BMGMCs) were fabricated using a copper mold suction casting method. Then, the semi-solid BMGMC samples were obtained following an isothermal treatment (heating at 900 °C for 10 min ...

The size dependence of ductile to brittle transition of Zr-based metallic glasses was systematically investigated by small punch test. It was found that the metallic glasses with thickness ranging from 50 to 700 μm displayed an obvious transition from ...

Evolution of cracks in the shear bands of granite residual soil
The evolution of shear bands and cracks plays an important role in landslides. However, there is no systematic method for classification of the cracks, which can be used to analyze the evolution of cracks in shear bands.

A mechanism of failure in shear bands [PDF]
We have carried out dilatant plasticity simulations to investigate the process of failure inside a shear band. The constitutive model accounts for possibly inhomogeneous flow within the band, void rotation and void elongation. We found that the material in the band may soften with no increase in the void volume fraction.

In situ transmission electron microscopy studies of shear bands in a bulk metallic glass based composite [PDF]
In situ straining transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments were performed to study the propagation of the shear bands in the Zr56.3Ti13.8Cu6.9Ni5.6Nb5.0Be12.5 bulk metallic glass based composite.

The Stress-Force-Fabric relation across shear bands [PDF]
The strength of granular materials is highly dependent on grain connectivity (fabric), force transmission, and frictional mobilization at the particle scale. Furthermore, these bulk properties are strongly dependent on the geometry and history of loading.
