A mechanism of failure in shear bands [PDF]
We have carried out dilatant plasticity simulations to investigate the process of failure inside a shear band. The constitutive model accounts for possibly inhomogeneous flow within the band, void rotation and void elongation. We found that the material in the band may soften with no increase in the void volume fraction.

Viscous shear banding in foam [PDF]
Shear banding is an important feature of flow in complex fluids. Essentially, shear bands refer to the coexistence of flowing and nonflowing regions in driven material. Understanding the possible sources of shear banding has important implications for a wide range of flow applications.

Evolution of cracks in the shear bands of granite residual soil
The evolution of shear bands and cracks plays an important role in landslides. However, there is no systematic method for classification of the cracks, which can be used to analyze the evolution of cracks in shear bands.

The Stress-Force-Fabric relation across shear bands [PDF]
The strength of granular materials is highly dependent on grain connectivity (fabric), force transmission, and frictional mobilization at the particle scale. Furthermore, these bulk properties are strongly dependent on the geometry and history of loading.

Micromechanics of shear banding [PDF]
Abstract Shear-banding is one of many instabilities observed during the plastic flow of solids. It is a consequence of the dislocation mechanism which makes plastic flow fundamentally inhomogeneous, and is exacerbated by local adiabatic heating.

Recrystallization Behavior of Warm Rolling and Cold Rolling Cr-Ti-B Steel during Annealing
To study the nucleation and recrystallization behavior of deformation bands, shear bands and grain boundaries during the recrystallization process, a heat treatment test was carried out on Cr-Ti-B low-carbon steel after warm rolling and cold rolling. The

Formation of Micro Shear Bands During Severe Plastic Deformation of BCC Alloys [PDF]
In this work, tendencies of pure Niobium, Fe-20Cr stainless steel, and Ti-36Nb-2Ta-3Zr to formation of micro shear bands inside their microstructures during severe plastic deformation are compared with their mechanical properties.

Interface Instability in Shear-Banding Flow [PDF]
We report on the spatio-temporal dynamics of the interface in shear-banding flow of a wormlike micellar system (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium nitrate in water) during a start-up experiment. Using the scattering properties of the induced structures, we demonstrate the existence of an instability of the interface between bands along the ...

Multiple shear bands in granular materials
The transition regime from quasi-static to dynamic shear regime is studied by discrete element method (DEM) and by means of a mesoscopic model. We show that at moderate shear rate multiple shear bands appear which eventually appear as a continuous shear ...

Investigation of shear band strengthening by using different strengthening criteria [PDF]
To prevent a critical failure mechanism, it is possible to simply strengthen the potential shear bands, which is a patented idea. The localization of potential shear bands that are most likely to form shear can be calculated. Before these shear bands can
