Shear Band Patterns in Biaxially Sheared Granular Media

Applying the principle of least dissipation rate to the biaxial shear geometry leads to the prediction that there are preferred shear band patterns according to the aspect ratio of the shear cell. By means of the Mohr‐Coulomb angle these patterns can be classified in terms of two integer indices.

Multiple Shear Banding in Granular Materials

We present numerical and experimental evidences for multiple shear band formation in sheared granular materials. A modified Couette cell with a split bottom near the outer cylinder is made rough by gluing glass beads on all boundaries. The cell is filled with the same beads and sheared by slowly rotating the inner cylinder and the attached bottom disk.

Complex dynamics of shear banded flows

Many complex fluids undergo a flow induced transition to a state of coexisting bands of differing viscosities and internal structuring. This effect, which is called "shear banding", is widely observed in wormlike micellar surfactants, onion surfactants, colloidal suspensions and polymer solutions.
