Athermal rheology of weakly attractive soft particles

open access: yes, 2016
We study the rheology of a soft particulate system where the inter-particle interactions are weakly attractive. Using extensive molecular dynamics simulations, we scan across a wide range of packing fractions ($\phi$), attraction strengths ($u$) and ...

Shear-band arrest and stress overshoots during inhomogeneous flow in a metallic glass [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
At the transition from a static to a dynamic deformation regime of a shear band in bulk metallic glasses, stress transients in terms of overshoots are observed.

Crossing of shears bands in 196Pb

open access: yesZeitschrift für Physik A Hadrons and Nuclei, 1996
High-spin states in 196Pb have been populated using the reaction 170Er(30Si,4n). The previously observed shears bands in this nucleus have been extended and some of their transitions have been reordered. They now form regular bands with band crossings. One of the bands splits into two pathways at high spin.

Calorimetric consequences of thermal softening in Johnson–Cook’s model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
At high loading rates, the development of adiabatic shear bands in metals is conventionally attributed to the strong interactions induced by viscoplastic dissipation within the bands and thermal softening effects.

Morphologies of three-dimensional shear bands in granular media

open access: yes, 2007
We present numerical results on spontaneous symmetry breaking strain localization in axisymmetric triaxial shear tests of granular materials. We simulated shear band formation using three-dimensional Distinct Element Method with spherical particles.

Finite width of quasistatic shear bands [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2008
I study the average deformation rate of an amorphous material submitted to an external uniform shear strain rate, in the geometry known as the split-bottom configuration. The material is described using a stochastic model of plasticity at a mesoscopic scale.

Shear band formation in granular media as a variational problem

open access: yes, 2004
Strain in sheared dense granular material is often localized in a narrow region called shear band. Recent experiments in a modified Couette cell provided localized shear flow in the bulk away from the confining walls.

Major Steps in the Discovery of Adiabatic Shear Bands [PDF]

open access: yesMetallurgical and Materials Transactions. A, 2014
The standard story of the discovery of adiabatic shear bands is that it began with the American researchers Zener and Hollomon’s famous 1944 paper where the phenomenon was first reported and named.

Shear banding in monodisperse polymer melt

open access: yesThe Journal of Chemical Physics, 2023
We performed a series of molecular dynamics simulations on monodisperse polymer melts to investigate the formation of shear banding. Under high shear rates, shear banding occurs, which is intimately accompanied by the entanglement heterogeneity. Interestingly, the same linear relationship between the end-to-end distance Ree and entanglement density Z ...

Understanding bio‐based polymers: A study of origins, properties, biodegradation and their impact on health and the environment

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review provides an overview of bio‐based polymer sources, their unique functional properties and their environmental impact, and addresses their role as sustainable alternatives. It discusses end‐of‐life options, including composting and anaerobic digestion for renewable energy.
