Step-Shear Deformation of Block Copolymers

open access: yesMacromolecules, 2018
A step-shear deformation imparts an instantaneous, anisotropic stimulus onto a microphase-separated block copolymer mesophase. In response to the concomitant molecular stretching and collective deformation of the morphology, the system relaxes toward a long-lived, pseudometastable state with a minuscule residual shear stress.

Molecular dynamics simulations of an anomalous response of diamond to shock compression [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We performed molecular dynamics simulations of shock wave propagation in diamond in the [110] crystallographic direction and observed an anomalous response of the material.

Dislocation‐Mediated Thermoelectric Performance and Mechanical Behavior

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Dislocations can scatter phonons to reduce thermal conductivity, thereby enhance thermoelectric performance. However, dislocations also impact mechanical properties, leading to increased brittleness and altered plasticity. It is essential to clarify the complex relationship between dislocations, thermal transport, and mechanical stability to achieve a ...

Influence of Back-Support Shear Wall for Shield Launching on the Mechanical Characteristics of the Reaction Frame

open access: yesChengshi guidao jiaotong yanjiu
Objective Due to the limited space available at the shield launching site, the restricted size of the reaction frame cannot provide sufficient shield launching reaction force on its own.

An analytical study of the effects of transverse shear deformation and anisotropy on natural vibration frequencies of laminated cylinders [PDF]

open access: yes
Natural vibration frequencies of orthotropic and anisotropic simply supported right circular cylinders are predicted using a higher-order transverse-shear deformation theory.

Gap opening in graphene by shear strain

open access: yes, 2010
We exploit the concept of strain-induced band structure engineering in graphene through the calculation of its electronic properties under uniaxial, shear, and combined uniaxial-shear deformations. We show that by combining shear deformations to uniaxial

Toughness of Confined Auxetic Foams

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Auxetic (negative Poisson's ratio) materials offer benefits such as impact mitigation, thermal insulation, vibration damping, and reduced shear strain, although their fracture mechanics are largely unexplored. This study investigates damage initiation and propagation in confined re‐entrant auxetic foams from polyurethane via experimental ...

Deformation-driven catalysis of nanocrystallization in amorphous Al alloys

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Nanotechnology, 2016
Nanocrystals develop in amorphous alloys usually during annealing treatments with growth- or nucleation-controlled mechanisms. An alternative processing route is intense deformation and nanocrystals have been shown to develop in shear bands during the ...

On the Deformation Behavior of Metastable CrMnNi Steels Processed by Directed Energy Deposition in Different Temperature Regimes

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In the present study, metastable CrMnNi steels with varying chemical compositions and a concomitantly altered stacking fault energy are processed via directed energy deposition and afterwards tested via tensile tests at different temperatures. The present study shows the influence of the manufacturing process on the elemental deformation mechanisms for
