Active megadetachment beneath the western United States [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Geodetic data, interpreted in light of seismic imaging, seismicity, xenolith studies, and the late Quaternary geologic history of the northern Great Basin, suggest that a subcontinental-scale extensional detachment is localized near the Moho.

Effects of elevated ground temperatures on properties of cement grouts for deep rock grouting

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
When the temperature is up to 35°C, significant improvement in rheological parameters, acceleration of grout setting, and an increase in the rheological time dependence of thick cement grout can occur, but there may be a slight effect on the initial grout flowability and the nature of shear thinning.

Fracturing behaviors of flawed granite induced by dynamic loadings: A study based on DIP and PFC

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This research examines granite's mechanical properties under split‐Hopkinson pressure bar testing, focusing on factors such as grain size and flaw dimensions. The study reveals that tension cracks are prevalent across grain sizes, with most intergrain cracks occurring between feldspar and quartz.

Evolution of twist-shear and dip-shear during X-class flare of 13 December 2006: Hinode observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The non-potentiality (NP) of the solar magnetic fields is measured traditionally in terms of magnetic shear angle i.e., the angle between observed and potential field azimuth. Here, we introduce another measure of shear that has not been studied earlier in solar active regions, i.e.

Ultra-thin clay layers facilitate seismic slip in carbonate faults [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Many earthquakes propagate up to the Earth's surface producing surface ruptures. Seismic slip propagation is facilitated by along-fault low dynamic frictional resistance, which is controlled by a number of physico-chemical lubrication mechanisms.

A comprehensive review of experimental studies on shear behavior of bolted rock joints with varying rock joint and bolt parameters and normal stress

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study reviews the research findings on the shear behavior of bolted rock joints in deep underground engineering, where they face high stress, high water pressure, and engineering disturbance. This study examines how the shear strength of bolted rock joints is affected by various factors, such as normal stress, rock compressive strength, joint ...

Geology of symmetric grounds [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Let us say that a model of $\mathsf{ZF}$ is a symmetric ground if $V$ is a symmetric extension of the model. In this paper, we investigate set-theoretic geology of symmetric grounds. Under a certain assumption, we show that all symmetric grounds of $V$ are uniformly definable. We also show that if $\mathsf{AC}$ is forceable over $V$, then the symmetric

Geology of the subduction thrust: insights from exhumed shear\ud zones on Kyushu, SW Japan [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Along plate interfaces in subduction zones, displacement occurs by a spectrum\ud of slip styles, including ∼steady creep, slow-slip events, tectonic tremor, and\ud earthquakes. However, the factors which determine where, and how, different\ud slip styles occur, are not clear.
