A Shear Lag Anomaly

Journal of the Structural Division, 1982
This technical note reports an interesting phenomenon associated with shear lag in the flanges of box girders that is quite contrary to well established ideas concerning this subject. A brief description of a beam model and solution technique are given. It is shown that if a cantilever tube is loaded laterally under non-uniform shear, a reversal of the

The treatment of shear lag in design

Thin-Walled Structures, 1990
Abstract This paper presents a comprehensive guide to designers for dealing with the shear lag problem in structural design. First, the effect of shear lag on the elastic behaviour of box girders is addressed and simple design rules for estimating its influence are described.

Shear Lag in Box Girders

Journal of the Structural Division, 1981
An initial approximate method is presented to evaluate the shear lag phenomenon in reinforced concrete single-box girder bridges. Assuming an ideal cross-section and considering a symmetrical deformation of the top and bottom slabs, but preserving continuity conditions at the web-slab intersection points, a fourth order non-homogeneous differential ...

Shear Lag in Shear/Core Walls

Journal of Structural Engineering, 1996
Shear lag occurs not only in bridge decks and framed tubes, but also in shear/core walls. However, there have been relatively few studies on shear lag in wall structures. Moreover, most existing theories neglect shear lag in the webs and, although they are acceptable for bridge decks that normally have flanges wider than webs, they may not be ...

HYPERELASTIC SHEAR LAG MODEL

Fizicheskaya Mezomekhanika
Based on the analysis of deformation of a representative volume, a micromechanical model is derived to describe the elastic modulus of a composite reinforced with unidirectional short fibers under tension in the reinforcement direction. The analysis includes an exact solution to the hyperelastic equations for the deformed matrix and an approximate ...

A DESIGN AID FOR SHEAR LAG CALCULATIONS.

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, 1980
A semi-empirical method, termed the "3-bar method", for calculation of shear lag effects in box girders is described. Explicit solutions for different support and loading conditions are presented which enable the amplified edge stresses due to shear lag to be calculated directly.

Shear Lag in Stiffened Box Girders

Journal of the Structural Division, 1970
METHODS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF SHEAR LAG IN WIDE FLANGES ARE REVIEWED AND A TREATMENT IS PRESENTED WHICH INCORPORATES THE EFFECT OF THE WEB UPON THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION IN THE STIFFENED FLANGE OF A BOX GIRDER BY REPLACING THE WEB WITH AN EDGE STIFFENER ON THE FLANGE. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE EFFECT OF SEVERE SHEAR LAG IN THE CURVATURE AND DISPLACED SHAPE

Shear Lag in Box Girder Bridges

Journal of Bridge Engineering, 2002
A finite-segment method for analyzing shear-lag effects in box girders is presented in this paper, with an assumption that the spanwise displacements of the flange plates are described by a third-power parabolic function. The governing differential equations for two generalized displacements are established according to the principle of minimum ...

Solution of Nonlinear Shear Lag Problems

Journal of the Structural Division, 1963
The governing differential equation for the plane stress problem of a nonlinear material and complete transverse rigidity is derived. Involving a stress function, it is applied in non-dimensionalized, finite difference form to two simply-supported cases of flanged beams having parabolic stress-strain relations. Results are given in the form of charts.

Negative Shear Lag Explained

Journal of Structural Engineering, 1991
The problem of negative shear lag in a cantilever beam subjected to a uniform load is explained in nonmathematical terms. In essence, the problem is one of two components (uniform-load component and concentrated reaction component), each of which is subjected to positive shear lag, being combined such that negative shear lag is produced.
