Flocs in Shear and Strain Flows
Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2000Preflocculated ferric hydroxide flocs were subjected to either a simple shear flow or a two-dimensional straining flow, and their motion was optically observed. Digital image analysis was applied to extract information on orientation and deformation from the digitized frames.

Strain variation in shear belts
Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, 1970In rocks deformed by natural orogenic processes it is usual to find that the finite strain state varies from locality to locality. In some deformed rocks high strain states are localized within approximately planar zones commonly known as "shear belts".The general relationships that exist between variable displacement and variable strain state are ...

Maximum entropy and shear strain of shear zone
Mathematical Geology, 1992The principle of maximum entropy can be used to determine the shear strain in natural shear zones. When the margin of a shear zone is assumed, the principle leads to the truncated exponential distribution of the shear strain. Ifx is the distance remote from the shear zone center, which possesses the maximum shear strain, the shear strain γ (x) is given

Shearing particle monolayers: Strain-rate frequency superposition
Physical Review E, 2010We report surface shear rheological measurements on monolayers of silica nanoparticles at the air-water interface. We have used the method of strain-rate frequency superposition (SRFS) to characterize the structural relaxation. We show that the rheological properties of the layers have the same universal linear and nonlinear behavior as three ...

Shearing interferometry and the moire method for shear strain determination
Applied Optics, 1988The methods of generating the cross derivatives of in-plane displacements by lateral shear interferometry and their subsequent addition are presented. Two approaches are introduced: (1) spatial filtering of composed diffraction structures and (2) moire superimposition of conjugate-type lateral shear interferograms.

Shear Strains, Strain Rates and Temperature Changes in Adiabatic Shear Bands
1981Experiments were conducted to determine the shear strains and strain rates in adiabatic shear bands in a Ni-Cr steel. An explosively driven punch was used to shear plugs from steel plates and, thereby, create adiabatic shear bands for investigation.

Adiabatic Shear Banding in Plane Strain Problems
Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1989Plane strain thermomechanical deformations of a viscoplastic body are studied with the objective of analyzing the localization of deformation into narrow bands of intense straining. Two different loadings, namely, the top and bottom surfaces subjected to a prescribed tangential velocity, and these two surfaces subjected to a preassigned normal velocity,

Principal component analysis of shear strain effects
Ultrasonics, 2009Shear stresses are always present during quasi-static strain imaging, since tissue slippage occurs along the lateral and elevational directions during an axial deformation. Shear stress components along the axial deformation axes add to the axial deformation while perpendicular components introduce both lateral and elevational rigid motion and ...

1991
A fundamental message of this work is the advantage gained from the separation of volumetric and deviatoric phenomena in the study of the physical and mechanical behavior of soils. With respect to the treatment of the volumetric phenomenon, consolidation, there is almost no discrepancy between this and the tri axial consolidation tests as they are in ...

Shear strain analysis and periodicity within shear gradients of metagranite shear zones
Journal of Structural Geology, 1995Abstract The distribution of natural ductile strain is studied by mapping continuous shear strain gradients across shear zones with widths of the order of tens of centimetres. The shear zones are derived from granites and the most ductile mineral (quartz) accommodates most of the rock deformation.
