Mesoscale modeling of shear-thinning polymer solutions
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2014We simulate the linear and nonlinear rheology of two different viscoelastic polymer solutions, a polyisobutylene solution in pristane and an aqueous solution of hydroxypropylcellulose, using a highly coarse-grained approach known as Responsive Particle Dynamics (RaPiD) model.

Time-Periodic Mixing of Shear-thinning Fluids
Chemical Engineering Research and Design, 2004Mixing times and energy consumption of inelastic shear-thinning fluids in stirred vessels were experimentally investigated using time-periodic conditions. The impeller rotated initially at a speed sufficient to allow the well-mixed region around the impeller to be formed and then the impeller was stopped and turned on periodically.

Shear-Thinning and Dilatant Rheologies
1994The rheological properties of crowded suspensions and pastes of powders dispersed in liquids is of fundamental importance to the forming properties of any ceramic article formed by the wet process. This includes such diverse products as brick and tile, whitewares, many refractories, electronic ceramics, and high performance ceramics.

Viscoelasticity and shear thinning of nanoconfined water
Physical Review E, 2014Understanding flow properties and phase behavior of water confined to nanometer-sized pores and slits is central to a wide range of problems in science, such as percolation in geology, lubrication of future nano-machines, self-assembly and interactions of biomolecules, and transport through porous media in filtration processes.

Shear thinning of colloidal dispersions
Journal of Rheology, 1998In this paper we calculate numerically the shear induced distortion of the equilibrium microstructure in a dilute colloidal suspension. In the low density limit, our predictions both with and without hydrodynamic interactions follow the form of the Ree–Eyring equation for the shear rate dependence of the rheology.

Shear thinning in concentrated dispersions
Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 1996A theory is presented to predict the effective shear viscosity of concentrated dispersions in steady state shear flow as a function of the volume fraction, particle size, interparticle interactions, and shear rate. Shear thinning has been qualitatively argued to be a result of shear-induced change in microstructure, which we shall discuss in terms of ...

Shear thinning and shear thickening of concentrated ceramic suspensions
Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects, 1998Abstract The steady shear properties of two important ceramic systems, Si3N4 powder, and the composite system SiC whiskers and Al2O3 particles, have been investigated. The concentrated, colloidally stable non-aqueous powder suspensions all displayed a shear thinning behaviour with an approach to a plateau at high shear rates which could be modelled ...
