Scalable Fabrication of Height‐Variable Microstructures with a Revised Wetting Model
Height‐variable microstructures are fabricated using a scalable CO2 laser machining approach, enabling precise control of wettability through structural gradients. Classical wetting models fail to capture height‐induced effects, necessitating a revised theoretical framework.

Activated dynamics and effective temperature in a steady state sheared glass
We conduct nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to measure the shear stress, the average inherent structure energy, and the effective temperature $T_{eff}$ of a sheared model glass as a function of bath temperature $T$ and shear strain rate. For

From Nature to Engineering: Mortar Volume and Interfacial Mechanics in Bioinspired Ceramics
Inspired by natural armors like nacre, this study explores how varying the volume fraction of the soft mortar layer impacts the interfacial strength and toughness of bioinspired ceramics. Experimental and computational analysis reveals that higher mortar volumes increase energy dissipation but reduce interfacial stiffness, offering insights for ...

Geology of the Susa Shear Zone (Susa Valley, Western Alps)
The 1:10,000 scale geological map of the Susa Shear Zone (SSZ) in the inner sector of the Western Alps, aims to describe the geological setting and tectonic evolution of a first-order Alpine shear zone, which drove exhumation and juxtaposition of ...

Shear zone refraction and deflection in layered granular materials [PDF]
Refraction and deflection of shear zones in layered granular materials was studied experimentally and numerically. We show, that (i) according to a recent theoretical prediction [T. Unger, Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 018301 (2007)] shear zones refract in layered systems in analogy with light refraction, (ii) zone refraction obeys Snell's law known from ...

Shear-induced diffusion in non-local granular flows [PDF]
We investigate the properties of self-diffusion in heterogeneous dense granular flows involving a gradient of stress and inertial number. The study is based on simulated plane shear with gravity and Poiseuille flows, in which non-local effects induce some creep flow in zones where stresses are below the yield.

Alteration-weakening leading to localized deformation in a damage aureole adjacent to a dormant shear zone [PDF]
Deformation adjacent to faults and shear zones is traditionally thought to correlate with slip. Inherited structures may control damage geometry, localizing fluid flow and deformation in a damage aureole around structures, even after displacement has ...

Toughness of Confined Auxetic Foams
Auxetic (negative Poisson's ratio) materials offer benefits such as impact mitigation, thermal insulation, vibration damping, and reduced shear strain, although their fracture mechanics are largely unexplored. This study investigates damage initiation and propagation in confined re‐entrant auxetic foams from polyurethane via experimental ...
