A Different Perspective on the Solid Lubrication Performance of Black Phosphorous: Friend or Foe?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Researchers investigate black phosphorous (BP) as a standalone solid lubricant coating through ball‐on‐disc linear‐reciprocating sliding experiments in dry conditions. Testing on different metals shows BP doesn't universally reduce friction and wear. However, it achieves 33% friction reduction on rougher iron surfaces and 23% wear reduction on aluminum.

An investigation into the controls of granite plutonism in the Sierra da Freita region, Northern Portugal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The Serra da Freita region of north central Portugal was chosen for study as it displays the complex relationships between regional structure, plutonism, regional and contact metamorphism typical of this part of Iberia.

Shear-Transformation-Zone Theory of Linear Glassy Dynamics

open access: yes, 2011
We present a linearized shear-transformation-zone (STZ) theory of glassy dynamics in which the internal STZ transition rates are characterized by a broad distribution of activation barriers.

Mechanisms of De‐icing by Surface Rayleigh and Plate Lamb Acoustic Waves

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ice accretion impacts daily life, renewable energy generation, maintenance, and security in industries and aeronautics. Acoustic waves (AW) are a promising method for ice removal, although de‐icing mechanisms require further investigation to optimize energy efficiency.

Influence zones for continuous beam systems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Unlike influence lines, the concept of influence zones is remarkably absent within the field of structural engineering, despite its existence in the closely related domain of geotechnics. This paper proposes the novel concept of a structural influence zone in relation to continuous beam systems and explores its size numerically with various design ...

Experimental analysis and modeling of orthogonal cutting using material and friction models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In this study, a process model for orthogonal cutting processes is proposed. The model involves the primary and secondary deformation zones. The primary shear zone is modeled by a Johnson-Cook constitutive relationship and a shear plane having constant ...

Advances in Hybrid Icing and Frosting Protection Strategies for Optics, Lens, and Photonics in Cold Environments Using Thin‐Film Acoustic Waves

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article provides a comprehensive overview of fundamentals and recent advances of transparent thin‐film surface acoustic wave technologies on glass substrates for monitoring and prevention/elimination of fog, ice, and frost. Fogging, icing, or frosting on optical lenses, optics/photonics, windshields, vehicle/airplane windows, and solar panel ...

Evidence from Rb–Sr mineral ages for multiple orogenic events in the Caledonides of Shetland, Scotland [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Shetland occupies a unique central location within the North Atlantic Caledonides. Thirty-three new high-precision Rb–Sr mineral ages indicate a polyorogenic history.

Nanoparticle‐Coated X2CrNiMo17‐12‐2 Powder for Additive Manufacturing – Part I: Surface, Flowability, and Optical Properties of SiC, Si, and Si3N4 Coated Metal Powders

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Herein, silicon‐based nanoparticle coatings on X2CrNiMo17‐12‐2 metal powder are presented. The coating process scale, process parameters, nanoparticle size (65–200 nm) as well as the coating amount are discussed regarding powder properties. The surface roughness affects the flowability, while reflectance depends on the coating material and surface ...

Reflection and Exclusion of Shear Zones in Inhomogeneous Granular Materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Shear localization in granular materials is studied experimentally and numerically. The system consists of two material layers with different effective frictions. The presence of the material interface leads to a special type of "total internal reflection" of the shear zone.
