Reverse shearing of shear bands in polystyrene

Journal of Materials Science, 1982
Shear bands produced in polystyrene by compression can be reverse sheared by a second compression in a perpendicular direction. The net shear strain can be zero or negative. Like the forward shear, the reverse shear also produces a ridge on the surface. The height of the ridge seems to be proportional to the reverse shear strain.

Measurement of Shear in a Lateral Shearing Interferometer

Optical Review, 1995
We analyze the influence of error in the measurement of shear value, which is a major source of error in tested results by the lateral shearing interferometer. A novel method is proposed for accurately measuring the shear of this interferometer. By introducing a defocused wavefront and making use of the wavefront slope data of the defocus and the ...

Simple shear tests with a varying shearing direction during cyclic shearing

Géotechnique Letters, 2014
Tests with cyclic lateral loading on a pile have shown that the pile reacts to a change of loading direction with increasing accumulation of lateral displacements. This phenomenon is known as ‘pile drift’. To investigate this behaviour at small scale under laboratory conditions, a specifically designed simple shear apparatus with two shearing axes was

Shear measurement of shearing speckle interferometry

Optics and Precision Engineering, 2012
Since the shear directly determines the displacement gradients of both out-of-plane and in-plane in the shearing speckle interferometry, the measurment precision of the shear should be improved to obtain the accurate strain distribution during the measurements of out-of-plane and in-plane strains. In this paper, four methods for the shear measurement ...

Strength of Sands in Wedge Shear, Triaxial Shear, and Shear Box Tests

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 2007
Abstract Limited tests had indicated peak drained values of angle of internal friction Φ of gravelly sands measured in the cylindrical wedge shear test (cylwest) to be relatively closer to the Φ expected from plane strain tests than from triaxial tests.
