Shear stress! A physics word puzzle

Physics Education, 2017
An interesting word puzzle to demonstrate how ordinary words have a different meaning in the physics classroom. Can you use the physics terms to work out the overall meaning of the text?

Shear Banding in Sandstone: Physical and Numerical Studies

International Journal of Geomechanics, 2006
The development of a localized damage zone or shear band in rock was studied through numerical and physical experiments. A laboratory biaxial (plane strain) compression test was conducted on a prismatic specimen of Berea sandstone. The shear band initiation and propagation were monitored by locations of acoustic emission and examination of thin ...

Physical Aging and Shear Creep of Poly(carbonate)

Mechanics of Time-Dependent Materials, 1998
In order to check Struik's theory of creep under proceeding aging, accurate torsional creep measurements have been performed on poly(carbonate) in the glassy region and in the glass-rubber transition. From the latter, the course of the compliance in volume equilibrium is derived.

A Physical model for shear-wave velocity prediction

56th EAEG Meeting, 1994
A velocity model for clay-sand mixtures has been developed by Xu and White (1993). In this model, the total pore space is assumed to consist of two parts: (1) pores associated with sand grains and (2) pores associated with clays. It is further assumed that the geometry of sand-related pores is significantly different from that of clay-related pores ...

Physical processes underlying the development of shear turbulence

Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics, 2004
A physical model of the development of turbulence in free shear flows is proposed. The model is based on the results of numerical simulations of turbulent flow development. The main ideas of the proposed theory of turbulence are stated as follows: the onset of turbulence begins with the formation of large vortices; spectral energy transfer involves ...

Shear Induced Irreversible Gelation through Physical Network Formation

Macromolecules, 2013
A resin mixture of vinyl ester and carboxyl terminated butadiene diluted with styrene shows an increase of viscosity when shearing the sample. Unlike previous reports on rheopexy and shear induced gelation of unfilled systems, this behavior leads to permanently elevated levels of viscosity.

Shear thinning pectin hydrogels physically cross-linked with chitosan nanogels

Carbohydrate Polymers, 2019
The development of a polymer-nanogel hydrogel based on a pair of polysaccharides is reported for the first time. This new hydrogel exhibits self-healing properties due to physical interactions between soluble pectin chains and chitosan nanogels.

Physical and numerical modeling of shear band formation

2009
Failure in soils is directly coupled to the formation of shear bands disconnecting the evolving failure body from the remaining soil continuum. For the scientific examination of shear band formation concerning earth pressure, base and slope failure several series of model tests are carried out at the Institute and Laboratory of Geotechnics of ...

Accelerated simulations of direct shear tests by physics engine

Computational Particle Mechanics, 2020
Physics engines, originally developed to simulate physical and mechanical processes in modern video games, are increasingly used as a scientific computational platform in many disciplines due to their high computational efficiency. This study explores the feasibility of using an open-source physics engine, Project Chrono, to simulate direct shear tests.

Physical Modeling of the Effect of Shearing on the Concentration Profile in a Shear Cell

Journal of The Electrochemical Society, 1999
The effect of the action of shearing a column of molten gallium (Ga) doped germanium (Ge) on the gallium concentration field in a shear cell segment was experimentally investigated using a physical model. A physical model is an experimental system that is different from the system of interest but connected by scaling relations.
