Origin and Significance of Centric Fusions in Domestic Sheep

Journal of Heredity, 1976
The karyotypes of 731 sheep of various breeds were studied and considered in association with previous chromosome studies of domestic sheep. A high incidence of the t2 trnslocation was found in two pedigree flocks of New Zealand Romney sheep. One of these flocks was established over 100 years ago and it is suggested that this translocation originated ...

PASTEURELLA SPP. IN SYMPATRIC BIGHORN AND DOMESTIC SHEEP

Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1997
Domestic sheep were sighted at different times from 1991 to 1993 on four Nevada (USA) ranges occupied by bighorn sheep. Nasal and pharyngeal swab samples were collected from both sheep species and cultured to determine if any strains of Pasteurella spp. were shared on range conditions after contact of the two species. Pasteurella spp.

Molecular evidence for fat-tailed sheep domestication

Tropical Animal Health and Production, 2011
The sheep is one of the most successful and widely spread domestic animals. Archaeological evidence traces the first domestic sheep back to the Near East region around 9,000 years ago. It is also known that soon after, the domesticated sheep started to flow out of the centre of origin and spread all over the ancient world following the expansion of ...

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in domestic sheep in Belgium

Veterinary Parasitology, 2014
Even though infected sheep are a potential source of Toxoplasma gondii infection in humans, information is lacking concerning the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in sheep in Belgium. We examined 3170 serum samples for anti-Toxoplasma IgG in sheep by total lysate antigen (TLA) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). IgG to T.

Pathology of AA Amyloidosis in Domestic Sheep and Goats

Veterinary Pathology, 2003
We describe the main pathologic changes in small ruminants affected by AA amyloidosis, together with the partial sequence of the protein involved. Twenty-one sheep and one goat were selected for presenting macroscopic kidney lesions compatible with systemic amyloidosis.

Chromosomes, Hemoglobins, and Transferrins of Iranian Domestic Sheep

Journal of Heredity, 1976
Twelve breeds of Iranian domestic sheep were cytogenetically analyzed. The diploid chromosome number of 2n = 54 is identical to that of most breeds of domestic sheep, which is comprised of 3 pairs of metacentric and 23 pairs of acrocentric autosomes. The sex chromosomes consist of a large acrocentric X and a small bi-armed Y.

Retinal Photoreceptor Fine Structure in the Domestic Sheep

Cells Tissues Organs, 1983
The structure of the photoreceptors of the domestic sheep has been investigated by light and electron microscopy. In the sheep retina the photoreceptors are readily differentiated and adequately described by the classical terminology of rods and cones. Rods are more numerous then cones. They appear as tall slender cells measuring 45–50 µm in length and

Mannheimia haemolytica infection in bighorn sheep and domestic sheep

2010
Respiratory disease caused by bacteria including Mannheimia haemolytica has contributed significantly to the drastic decline of bighorn sheep (BHS, Ovis canadensis) population of North America, from an estimated two million animals at the beginning of the nineteenth century to less than 70,000 today. Although M. haemolytica causes pneumonia in a number

A New Species of Coccidia from Domestic Sheep

The Journal of Parasitology, 1952
While engaged in research on members of the genus Eimeria infecting Wyoming sheep, an undescribed species was observed. The parasite was recovered from two of nine animals housed at the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory at Laramie, Wyoming. Both animals had multiple infections; oocysts of Eimeria airloingi, E. ah-sa-ta, E. parva, E.

[Domestication-related behavior in sheep].

Genetika, 1997
The motivational nature of domestication-related behavior, as well as its formation and variation at the ontogenetic, population, and breed levels were studied. Food motivation participated in the environmental regulation of sheep defensive reactions to humans: an increase in motivation decreased the strength of defensive behavior, and vice versa ...
