Analysis of flow dead zone in shell side of a heat exchanger with torsional flow in shell side

Applied Thermal Engineering, 2020
Abstract In order to improve the heat transfer efficiency of the heat exchanger, the characteristics of dead zone and its effect on thermal performance in the shell side of a novel heat exchanger with torsional flow were discussed. The residence time distribution method combining with the CFD were used to analyze quantitatively and qualitatively the ...

Coupling of the Cylindrical Shell with Side Elements

Construction Technologies and Architecture, 2023
The paper proposes an analytical method for calculating a long cylindrical shell supported by two identical side elements and loaded with vertical load. The case when the shell is hinged on curvilinear edges is considered, and recommendations for taking into account other boundary conditions are given.

FPSO Side Shell Impact Proctection

Offshore Technology Conference, 2011
Abstract Traditionally the impact requirements set out by MARPOL for FPSO's and FSO's have been addressed by creating internal cofferdams or external sponsons. Intelligent Engineering has demonstrated that its Sandwich Plate System (SPS), a unique steel-polymer-steel composite materials technology, in the form of a ...

Numerical investigation of shell side performance of a double shell side rod baffle heat exchanger

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2017
Abstract A double shell side rod baffle heat exchanger (DS-RBHX) is proposed, and comparisons between single shell side rod baffle heat exchanger (SS-RBHX) and DS-RBHX in terms of the heat transfer and pressure drop in the shell side are presented in this study. A realizable k-epsilon model is adopted to solve the turbulent flow problem.

Down‐flow shell‐side forced convective boiling

AIChE Journal, 1986
AbstractOne hundred sets of R‐11 two‐phase pressure drop and boiling heat transfer data are reported for cocurrent down‐flow over an in‐line tube bundle. The pressure drop data agree with predicitions using the Diehl correlation. A new heat transfer correlation is reported, accounting for the observed convective and nucleate mechanisms.

Shell side CFD analysis of a small shell-and-tube heat exchanger

Energy Conversion and Management, 2010
Abstract The shell side design of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger; in particular the baffle spacing, baffle cut and shell diameter dependencies of the heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop are investigated by numerically modeling a small heat exchanger.

Fatigue damage in the side shells of ships

Marine Structures, 1995
More than 40% of the registered fatigue cracks in ship structures are observed to occur in the side shell, more specifically in the connections of longitudinals to transverse web frames. The fatigue damage is caused partly by vertical and horizontal wave-induced hull bending and partly by outside water pressure on the side shell.

Shell-side heat transfer in double-segmentally baffled cylindrical shell-and-tube exchangers

Letters in Heat and Mass Transfer, 1982
Abstract Initial results are presented for double-segmentally baffled shell-and-tube heat exchangers, with leakage. The results are compared with those for a single-segmentally baffled exchanger of similar geometry, and shown to be similar to that of two such exchangers in a back-to-back parallel configuration.
